HP Misc. Facts [message #239798] Mo, 27 März 2006 18:32
wadkin2000
OK...so while I was watching (for all of the USA people) George Mason
pull one of the biggest upsets by defeating UConn in basketball
yesterday, I found some interesting minutia about HP. (JK really does
do research!)

Cinnabar is the bright red ore of mercury sulfide known as "dragon's
blood".
Calamus Draco is a palm tree known as "dragon's blood". It has red
berries and the resin of the berries was used to stop bleeding.
A bezoar is a ball of swallowed foreign material (usually hair or
fiber) that collects in the stomach and fails to pass thru the
intestines and is thought to be used as an antidote to poisons.
There is a Bezoar Goat that's found on the Greek Islands, Turkey, Iran
and Pakistan.
Monkshood is a poisonous herb that's also known as aconite.
Wormwood is a herb good for treatment of wasp stings and various other
ailments.
Mandrake or mandragora plants are used as an anesthetic. During the
Renaissance, people began selling the mandrake roots. A myth started
about the plant roots shrieking, causing insanity. This started because
injesting too much mandrake juice from the plant caused severe
hallucinations lasting for several days (Ah, the LSD precurser!)
Wolfsbane is a perennial herb of the buttercup family. It's one of the
most poisonous plants in Europe. The Plant was used for killing,
panthers, wolves and other carnivores.

That's the end of today's lesson, boys and girls!

It may not seem like it, but I really DO have a life!

I think I still have one of those wandering around from my Parisian summer
of '68. Anyway, I've never been poisoned. <burp>

During my trips to Paris, I had so much C2 H5 OH in my system that the
poison would have been poisoned...or was it London...or...? Actually,
all those trips are a bit hazy for me...instead of "The Lost Weekend",
it's more like "The Lost Vacations!"
I'm exaggerating...(a little!)

Thanks DM. That really felt good. Bless your little pea pickin' heart
(remember who always said that?).

I have a blurred foto of De Gaulle driving by in what was to be his last
Bastille Day parade (a gun would have missed him too). I also have a
souvenir program from the Lido where I saw Siegfried *et* Roy with their
original cheetah. Would that convince you? (And, yes, I was served
champagne.)

But I do notice that my mind seems to be starting into second childhood,
if that's what you mean. On the other hand, I would have appreciated some
sort of warning before reading about your new Barbie so that I could have
taken an anti-convulsive.

Now I know how you got that perfect map of the Paris Métro above the left
knee. (If that WAS you, then don't worry. I keep my old polaroids in the
safe.) I generally prefer to do as the locals do. IIRC, les Français ne
boit pas trop, mais ils boit toujours.

I believe you. It's just the image I had of you from reading your posts
was that of a twenty-something. Tennessee Ford's fame was before my time
(I was just a toddler in the late sixties), but I knew who you meant.
Classic country was popular in my household while growing up. I didn't
care for it, still don't, but my parents couldn't get enough of Hank
Williams (Senior), Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, etc.

I thought my Barbie doll was very mild considering the nature of society
and news these days.

Sorry friend, and I do consider you to be one, it's my fault for not
having been more precise. I was trying to say that there are simply things
that one should not surprise older people with. I had to laugh so hard at
your Barbie that the situation almost became life threatening. Had I known
what was coming, I could have premedicated myself. Luckily, I got off with
only a change of underwear.

My English is admittedly rusty. My vocabulary and style are often from a
lost time and place. When in doubt, kindly assume that I am just
attempting sarcastic humor.

I kind of picture you as being very young as well. But then, I always
pictured Troels as looking like a hobbit... (Damn, I hope he isn't

Oooh! In that case, cool! :D

I thought you meant you found the subject matter a bit offensive, which
would be understandable since I popped it up in a Harry Potter
newsgroup. Off-topic posts which are noted as such in the subject line
rarely bother me, but even so, one of my peeves is OT political rants.

Well, English is my first and only language but I'm sure it still leaves
much to be desired. You articulate yourself in English better than most,
myself included, so don't worry about it.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm laughing right now trying to
picture Troels as a hobbit! This group was very lucky, indeed, to have
him as a participant!

I can picture any HP fan here is still being young at heart. Preserving a
certain well mannered sense of mischief certainly adds to the fun in this
group. I like you best when you respond to something by going into
satirical HP fan-fic mode. You can be quite entertaining.

I recall seeing a photo of Troels and 2 kids somewhere in the Hogwarts
Library (http://www.hogwarts-library.net/) but I haven't been there for
quite a while. He would certainly blend in somewhere in Lord of the Rings,
but I see him more in the role of a better groomed Hagrid.

I have never seen him take offense. If ever he did, he probably just
didn't reply or he found a way of outing the offender as a cretin while
making him think he was receiving a major compliment.

He is most assuredly lurking around here.

There are those in the Siegfried and Roy fandom who would kill for such a
treasure.

Perhaps someone could point me to a place in S&R fandom where I might get
a better price than with eBay. Had I paid more attention in Divination, I
would have rushed to the stage door for autographs.

If the truth be told, I had forgotten about them until I saw the souvenir
program pictured in a S&R TV documentary last summer. I remember their act
as being elegantly boring until they finished by *apparating* the cheetah.
The pickpocket who worked the audience, as well as the jugglers and
acrobats were much more memorable. (...not to mention the topless girls.)

Sorry; eBay is probably your best bet.
