I have only read each book once, so forgive me if I have missed something.
In Book 1, Ollivander said that "the wand picks the wizard". Yet, it seemed
to me, that HE was doing the picking, as he took each wand from Harry and
then decided to give him the one like Lord Voldemort's.
Also, if the wand picks the wizard, when Harry first met Ron, didn't Ron
have a hand me down wand? As I recall it was all torn up and had unicorn
hair sticking out of it...
I thought that perhaps there is something to Ollivander, and him picking the
wand himself.
I also recall reading something about him possibly being Dumbledore's
brother, but I don't see how that figures into it all either.
Let me know what all I am wrong on.
Thanks,
Steph

Because they didn't do anything. When the RIGHT one was in Harry's hands,
it reacted.

The Weasleys are poor. Though I so wonder: If they gave Ron Charlie's old
wand what did Charlie do? Did they get him a new one? Why not just spend
that money to get RON a new wand?

I got the impression that as an experienced wand maker, Ollivander has
an instinct (helped by the measurements he took) which allows him to
guess what sort of wand might pick a particular wizard. However after
a long time of wands not picking harry, Ollivander just thought to try
the other one with Fawkes' feather in it. The brother wand of LV's
choose harry because, as the Sorting Hat detected, harry has many
LV-like characteristics.

Yes, that's why Ron's magic wouldn't have been as good as it could have
been had he been given a wand which picked him.
> I thought that perhaps there is something to Ollivander, and him picking the

if that were the case how do you think Ollivander controls the wands in
order to get just the one he picks to react to harry taking hold of the
wand?

neither do I.
> Let me know what all I am wrong on.
Your suggestion that Ollivander picks the wand contradicts the books
(Ollivander says that the wand picks the wizard) as well as JKR in
interview, who has talked about this explicitly saying that the wand
picks the wizard.

"the wand picks the wizard" seems to be true...
Harry took the wand. He felt a sudden warmth in his fingers. He raised the
wand above his head, brought it swishing down through the dusty air and a
stream of red and gold sparks shot from the end like a firework, throwing
dancing spots of light on to the walls. Hagrid whooped and clapped and Mr.
Ollivander cried, Oh, bravo! Yes, indeed, oh, very good. Well, well, well.
how curious. how very curious. He put Harry's wand back into its box and
wrapped it in brown paper, still muttering, Curious. curious.
Sorry, said Harry, but what's curious? Mr. Ollivander fixed Harry with his
pale stare.
I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr. Potter. Every single wand. It so
happens that the phoenix whose tail feather is in your wand, gave another
feather - just one other. It is very curious indeed that you should be
destined for this wand when its brother - why, its brother gave you that
scar.
Harry swallowed. Yes, thirteen-and-a-half inches. Yew. Curious indeed how
these things happen. The wand chooses the wizard, remember.
Harry tried many wand with no effects. Without Harry or Olivander doing
anything different it was obvious to all 3 that this wand choose Harry.
______
While it seems that any wizard can use any wand; all wands are not created
equal.
Olivander makes the best wand [at least in England]. Harry has enough money
to get the best. Ron doesn't have enough money to get the best, it wouldn't
surprise me that Ron would have a hand me down Olivander wand.
______
as for as Dumbledore's brother... I think it's the bar guy at the Hogheads
or something like that where people think he might be DD brother.

It might be that Charlie needed a new one when Ron was too young and
they kept it because it was a valuable thing. Then, when Ron needed the
wand, they had it already.
It's also possible that Charlie's wand was also a hand me down wand, and
once he got money, he wanted to buy a new one.

Well, when Ollivander chose the wands, he probably chose ones that he
thought would work better for the certain person since he probably made
the wands himself. if that doesn't make sense, sorry. and i don't think
him or dumbledore are brothers at all. i've read all the books twice,
and i haven't ran into that info. And i also don't remember about ron.

Why is the barman of the Hog's Head vaguely familiar to Harry? Is he
Dumbledore's brother?
Ooh-you are getting good. Why do you think that it is Aberforth?
[Audience member: Various clues. He smells of goats and he looks a bit

Charlie's old wand may have been a hand-me-down as well, and at the time
it may have been Charlie's turn to get a present, so he gets a new wand.

Well, if they both convert to Islam, they'll be brothers. Rather late

The wands were picking. He merely noted which one picked Harry. The
other's rejected him. Think of Ollivander as a wand translator. But
they speak in actions, not words.

That all depends on what you consider a clue. That is, it clearly /was/
actually a clue. The clues people perceived that Snape was a vampire or
that Harry was the Heir of Gryffindor, on the other hand, went past
"subtle" into "not really there." What would you consider to be a more
subtle clue to something which has been proven in the books? (You know
what I'm thinking of; clues that Harry is a Horcrux or that Snape had
positive feelings for Lily might count after Book 7 is released, but not
now.)

I think Aberforth has been trying to speed up the production of bezoars
(which accumulate in goats' stomachs). They should be quite valuable,
especially when there are Dark wizards who will use poison. Somebody
had access to quite a supply of them, since there was a box full of
them in the supply closet.
He may even have been trying to breed a goat that would produce a
super-bezoar that would be good against all poisons instead of just
"most" poisons.

There is also the theory that JKR is a fan of Marc Chagall who often has
goats *hanging around* in the sky.

She was actually asked what Aberforth was doing with the goats, and her
answer was "your guess is as good as mine." I think she wants the
Hogwarts students to have a vague notion that he was involved in
something nasty/naughty, but not much more than that. Which is a rather
common schoolkid notion, contributing to the richness of school life.
It's the sort of thing where explicit details actually detract from the
plot.
Back in high school, we had a few teachers who resigned for mysterious
reasons. Part of growing up what speculating on why. I suspect the
actual reasons never achieved the level of salacity that we came up
with.

Maybe Aberforth is a Chicago White Sox fan, and he's trying to
