| Hugo nomination for GoF movie [message #239285] |

The GoF movie has gotten a Hugo nomination in the Best Dramatic
Presentation, Long Form category. It's up against _Batman Begins_, the
Narnia movie, _Serenity_, and _Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-
Rabbit_.
Let us recall that GoF was the one Harry Potter book that won the Best
Novel Hugo. (PoA was nominated but lost to _A Deepness in the Sky_.)

Interesting. None of them have enough thematic depth to deserve a Hugo, in
my opinion.

And rightfully so, IMHO.

If book 7 is as good as HBP, I won't be surprised to see it get a nomi-
nation. I think it'll be much the same thing as Peter Jackson's _Return
of the King_ at the Oscars-- people will vote for or against it as a
referendum on the whole series.

I think 'Serenity' will win. Personally, I'd vote for 'Batman
Begins.' 'Serenity' was good, but just felt like a slightly larger TV
episode. BB was a great return to Batman's roots. Goblet, while
good, IMO is just behind BB. I liked Narnia- but did not love it. I
appreciate it more for its detractors than for the quality of the
flick <G>. As for W&G- 'Were-Rabbit' frankly suffers in comparison to
the shorts.

If I understand the Hugos correctly, from the people who watched them and,
in turn, nominated them.
Anyways, I don't watch that many movies, but how many other sci-fi/fantasy
movies came out last year?

Specifically, everyone who has a Worldcon membership by the nominating
deadline was allowed to nominate up to five candidates for each category.
The ones with the top five nomination counts (sometimes more than five
candidates if there's a tie for fifth place) become the actual nominees.

Quite a few, but, in the grand Hollywood tradition of not taking sf
seriously, most were terrible.

I'd give it the best odds, definitely, just because of the extremely
loyal Joss Whedon fan base. Haven't seen it yet, though I suppose now
that I've seen three of the nominees (the GoF DVD index is coming, but
very slowly) it wouldn't hurt me to rent _Serenity_ and _Batman Begins_
and then actually vote.
Of the three I have seen, I'd vote for W&G, and then No Award.

I liked the book very much, I just don't think it, or any of the Potter
series, has much thematic depth. You're probably right.
