Hello, All,
About HBP and fanfiction, I have a number of questions/comments.
I really enjoyed HBP, (even though there were a number of things I was
expecting that weren't there) but I don't like where it leaves
fanfiction writers. I've already read some good stories about
galavanting and hunting horcruxes, but the plot of any seventh year
story is pretty much limited to that. I've recently started writing
fanfic, but I'm not interested in working in that constraint. (I know
there are other subgenres-Marauders era, post-Hogwarts, etc. I could
think about.)
Do any of you have good post-HBP recommendations?
Another Q is if those of you who read fanfic are still interested in
6th year fics that are now AU. I had lots of thoughts about what could
go in year 6 and a lot didn't happen. We didn't see: Harry deal
with Sirius's loss much (he seemed more affected by Cedric than
Sirius-compare first few chaps of books 5 and 6);
any meat to the reconciliation of Harry and DD;
any buildup of a relationship (I ship with JKR, but I also thought
we'd see Luna live up to her name.);
Harry growing much magically (I was really disappointed that he
didn't get soundless casting down after a year of lessons.)
Voldemort. Not in the book at all.
Anyway, I had all kinds of scenes in my head, and JKR didn't come
near them, so I decided to write my 6th year story-yes, after HBP
came out. Is that just crazy? Anyway, it addresses the points above
and has some nice wish-fulfillment, too (Draco and Snape will both get
smacked down some.) It's probably poor taste to plug your own
fanfic. Alas, too late. My fanfiction.net page is easy to find

I'll end with something less self-centered. If you haven't
discovered www.fanficauthors.net, go there. It was started by Jeconais
and now includes about a score of authors, that I believe are on there
by invite only. Lots of quality reading there. Jeconais's latest WIP,
Hope, is fantastic.
