On the other hand, that sort of action is questionable. You can be
killfiled and ignored, and I think that after a while without replies
you would tire of these games and move on or grow up. Getting
somebody's services terminated is the strongest action possible, and I
for one do not think it is warranted in this case.

Now, it's entirely possible that your behaviour is contrary to the terms
and conditions of the various service providers, and presumably you
would have known about these. If you have violated the T&Cs you have
agreed to you do not, formally, have any reason to complain. Caveat
Poster and so on.

Personally, I agree that it's harsh. Of course, there is some history
with David and TOSing, so I am surprised he's done it in this case.

Google has no record of you posting anything anywhere. So either you
are a lurker who feels this is an issue important enough to speak up on,

<nitpick> No, it's not. The strongest *possible* action would be a UDP
against any provider willing to let him post. </nitpick>

At any rate, I do think it is warranted in this case. Not only is Mr
Catto's (if that's his real name) behaviour willfully disruptive to the
group and insulting to several individuals, it is also most likely in
breach of the T&Cs of one or more of his providers, which should be a
reason to terminate his internet/usenet access.

In other words: When he signed up, he most likely agreed to play by the
rules. He obviously doesn't, so he should be thrown out.

It's not that harsh. In most parts of the world, there's more than one
way to get online, including anonymous dial-up. Termination of services
is little more than a warning shot, at least until he has exhausted all
possible ISPs.

As far as I am concerned, Usenet *is* part of real life. It provides me
with interest and amusement for a significant number of hours per week.
I have enjoyed meeting in the flesh people I have first encountered on
Usenet. I have felt a distinct loss and hurt when social groupings
operating on Usenet were destroyed by trolls and people who could not
resist rising to trolls.

Within the law and common decency, I see no argument against trying to
protect something of value to your from deliberate vandalism. And such
actions need not be restricted to Usenet itself. To say otherwise is
like playground bullies complaining that it is unfair when their victims
report them to teachers.

ISTM that Pumba is deliberately trying to destroy the social community
that is afp. That is, deliberately to destroy the pleasure of others, to
no gain to himself other than than the achievement of doing so - an act
of petty sadism. I see no reason why David should not report him,
truthfully, to any authority who may have the power to stop his
vandalism.

Perhaps you could, oh, I don't know, post about it to a newsgroup. Or to
multiple newsgroups. You know, advertise it a bit, for those of us who
didn't know this option was available.

It certainly makes it a lot easier for the rest of us to complain about
you now that you've shown us the One True Way. Thank you for your
contribution. What a truly selfless act. Not at all like a whiny
