Short stories bite! [message #236700] Mi, 15 März 2006 11:58

*sighs* For the other writers, does anybody else seem to have the problem
where you go to write a short story (I mean short. Like 1000 word short),
and all of a sudden *BOOM* the thing is 3000 words long!
What do you do to keep the story accurate and alive, but not burst the word
dam?
It always seems to happen. I've just had to completely rip a story appart,
remove the dialogue and commentate the whole thing. Not to mention I've
pulled the plug on all but the most vital descriptions...
Hmmm. It's a bit of a twisty plotline, too. When I eventually get my page up
and running again, I drop you all a link so you can read it.

A friend of mine is actually a professional writer and has had several
books published and she told me once that short stories are actually
harder to write than novellas or full length books. What she
recommends is to make sure you have a precise outline for the story and
stick to it... something I've constantly had trouble with because it
seems the story always has it's own ideas about where it wants to go,
and my desires are merely taken as a suggestion with no obligation to
be followed...

For a 1000 word story, you need a plot that isn't too twisty... if it turns
out that way, it might be it isn't a good plot for a short story. Having no
dialogue and minimum decription to race through a long plot isn't ideal.

One fun exercise is to try and write something like an 100 word story. There
the plot has to be very precise to fit the word limit.

If I ever figure that out, I'll let you know. None of the stories I've tried
to keep that short have ever turned out to be worth anything in that form. As
much as I enjoy reading them, I just can't manage to write them.

Well, I belive the ideas I'm playing with are good ones, the execution just
needs a lot of work. Unfortunately, that always extends them beyond the length
I was going for. I'm not not tearing my scales out over it though. It will
work itself out in the end.

It most always seems to...
I'm currently wracking my brain on another story. I have the beginning, the
middle and the end. It should be easy right? Pah! I'm going somewhere, only
I don't know the road I'm on. I know where I started and the destiantion's
final, but how I get there is anybody's guess. I know the landmarks to look
for, but like the rest of my story, they're want to change in a heartbeat as
the story goes cross-country on a path I didn't even have marked on the map.
*Grins* I can't believe I took that long to use one metaphor to describe my
story... or at least how it is heading, anyway. No wonder I write so much...

3000? I haven't written under 5000!
Well....*checks the two from the summer*
Never mind, I've got a 900 word shoty here. :P The other one is 2600.
Still, those two were all supposed to be "3 pages." The 900 one is 5.
My longest (and actually incomplete) is 6248 words (21 pages) long.

Yeah, I know how that goes. Another one that annoys me is when the main
character just can't seem to figure out what he wants to do. He sits around
for half the story, or longer, thinking about what he should do, and this was
supposed to be a much faster paced story than he's letting it become. I know
what he is ultimately going to decide, but he's sure taking his time making
the decision.

That one's on hold while i let the character think things through. In the mean
time, I'm trying to come up with a few names for characters in a couple of
other stories. Always one of the worst parts of this process for me.

Well, I mainly make up my own names, but sometimes I use historical ones.
Wynn is a good example. It means 'joy' in olde english. It's for an orphaned
character with a lot of problems. Sort of ironic, but the general sound of
the name is important for me too. As far as I'm concerned, the naming of the
character is as important as the character itself.

These are projects I'm forced into by the school. My longest one is curently
about 30 handwritten pages long... but I have two others of about the same
length. I plan for short to medium novel size.

Most definitely.
Harry Potter would only be half as exciting without all the references and
minute details like names such as Prof. Umbridge. Umbrage means to take
offence.

Would that it were that easy for me. I've resorted to searching for
appropriate Gaelic words in one case, but another one requires an acronym,
and that one's taking forever to come up with. You know how many synonyms I
have to search for, then try arranging in different combinations, just to
start. Then throw all of them out when they don't work and start trying all
over again.

Naming a computer is not an easy task.

In terms of this story, I've tried that. The character is too stubborn. I've
considered just picking him up and throwing him in the basic direction, but I
decided to try getting into his head first. I'm currently rewriting it from
his perspective, literally. It was third person, it's now first. Maybe that
will help.

Doesn't always work when not all of your characters are human. SHODAN, for
example, is probably copyrighted, or trademarked, or whatever, such that it's
tied in very closely to a previous title. In any case, I'm not sure I want to
try getting away with it. Thus, the need for a new computer name.

Gotta get inside his head and see how it works. Quite often I'll (okay,
admitedly this sounds wierd) get inside one of my characters for an hour or
so and write a journal from them, or a poem, or even a letter and it helps
me see things differently.

Oh, most of my characters aren't human. I play with everything from dragons,
Unicorns, centaurs, nymphs, dryans, shapeshifters, wolves... it goes on.
Only a minority of my characters are acutally human.
