There has not been any official word on when or even if a six-movie DVD
set will be released.

Some intelligent guess work suggests the possibility of it being in
2007, the 30th anniversary of the first movie, but they may also wait
to see what happens between the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats, and then
release the whole Saga on one of those.

Doubtful, but possible.

Today's DVD's, double layered, can hold 9.4 GB, and the HD-DVD and the Blu-
Ray are rumored to be able to hold 50GB...at best, only 5 times as much as
a standadrd DVD...so I don't think we'll see all six movies on one disc.

Plus all the extras on the same disc.

The latter is unlikely for some time (re: years). Lucas has set a
precedent to not release videos on new media until it is settled in
wide markets. If he does rerelease the entire saga within the next few
years, it will be on conventional DVD.

I dunno, I could see him releasing the trilogy on HD-DVD and BluRay in
their 3-D versions after limited theatrical release...maybe have the
convention versioins of each movie *and* the 3-D versions on the same disc.

If I had to guess, I'd say May of 2007 for the 30th anniversary of the
original SW.

It would be good if Lucas did at least one significant thing on the fans
favourite date.

Surely that would be a waste of resources. 1 film and a few extras on a
disk that can hold 50gigs ?

No, I think to be an effective use of the resource, the movies(with extras)
will be on two disks. One per trilogy.

It's possible to fit all six movies or one trilogy onto a CD, but the
quality is crap (and sold by bootleggers / pirates).

"50gigs" is peanuts, especially when you're talking about high
definition video with high quality sound, and even more so when you add
non-English language tracks, director explanations, etc. found on most
DVDs these days.

See this is what I think will happen.

Lucas will release I, II, and III in a box set.
The the 3D movies will be sold indivually, then in a box set.
After that 1-6 will be in one bix box set.
By then, it wil be 2010 and Lucas announces the TV show Seasons 1-5 are now
on DVD and 3 new movies are now in pre production.
Again, my opinion.

I dunno, would it really require all that much?

I mean, current DVD players output 480i with progressive scan model
outputting 480p (720x480)...and HD is 1280x720 (720p) or 1920x1080 (1080i),
a little more than 2.5x that of conventional DVD. Would a little more than
2.5x resolution require 5x more space? Even considering the data rate of
standard DVD is 19.4 Mbps, and the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are supposed to
output 36 Mbps, its still only around 2X...

so how do you figure if everything is around 2 to 2.5 times more, that
somehow 50 GB is "peanuts"? it would seem to me that if everything fits on
a double sided DVD ( [at] 9.4 GB) were made HD, it would still be around 23
GB...less than half the 50GB capacity.

Simple, take out all scenes with Jar-Jar. Take out the dance number in
ROTJ, maybe a couple of Anakin/Padme scenes, etc.. :-)
