Vader's helmet off in ESB [message #236378] Di, 21 März 2006 01:38

Does anyone know how long Vader can have his helmet off before it must
be put back on?

I thought that he had to be in a pressureized enviorment before he could
take it off but in the scene where he is in the meditation chamber when
we catch a glimpse of the backside of his head the chamber was open!

At the end of ROTJ when Luke took Vaders helmet off it was just a matter
of minutes before he died.
Remember that just as Luke loosened the helmet you can hear the air rush
out.

Maybe it was the after effects of the "force lightning" attack from the
Emperor that killed him right?

Just wondering....

I'm sure Vader can hold his breath for a few seconds. The chamber wasn't
open the whole time he was feeling the breeze.

Vader as much said he was dying even before Luke agreed to lift the helmet
and there was clearly something audibly wrong with his breathing. The
Chancellor's lightning likely broke his life support suit so he was on his
own for the entire time Luke was hauling him to the docking bay.

Plus, it looked like Luke was going to be stubborn about not leaving him
behind and the rebel scum were about to break the Death Star around them so
Vader probably figured - fuck it, I've said my piece and I'm not in the mood
for another parental argument - I'm leaving.

He was just trying to freak out General Veers.

I think he could manage without the helmet. What look took off was not only
the helmet, but the mask.

Oops, bad spellcheck: "look" should be "Luke".

In ESB, the mask and helmet were attached so they were both off. It was only
starting in ROTJ (and ROS) that the mask and helmet became separate pieces
to be disassembled.

Rewatch the scene in ESB.

He is correct. I just watched it here on my computer and you can see there
is front to the helmet and the top of Vader's head does not have anything on
it.

For all we know the meditation chamber was pressurized and just
separated with an invisible energy field.
