Imperial Walkers in ESB [message #236299] Fr, 17 März 2006 23:35

I've always been curious on how they got the Walkers down to the surface
of Hoth.

Did they use the large Star Destroyers like Vaders or did they use some
other type of ship.
It isn't like the Walkers were small ya know!

Star Destroyers don't land on planets (at least not on purpose) because
they're far too big. The AT-ATs, AT-STs and troops are are shuttled
down by various sized assault craft stationed on the Star Destroyers.

What about the Destroyer on Kashyyyk?

Star Destroyers weren't even designed at the time we see Kashyyyk in
Episode III (if that's what you mean). The triangular ships seen in the
Prequel movies are not Star Destroyers, although in many ways they are
a much smaller predecessor.

That's actually answered in the computer games.
The AT-AT's are transported by a so-called Landing Barge, a huge sitting
duck, able to hold 2 AT's or 6 ST's. Just check this:

I always thought that a nice addition to the ESB SE would have been a single
shot of the AT-ATs or their carriers landing on the surface of Hoth.

Is this Darth Maus?

Haven't seen you around for a while here. You haven't been posting much (or
maybe not at all) IIRC.

I wondered if you left or not... :-)

Those were not Star Destroyers. Those were Republic Assault Ships, which
are less than half the size of Star Destroyers.

No it wouldn't.

It would spoil the buildup of the Walker's approach. You feel them
first, then see them as tiny dots, you don't know what's really coming
until they unleash hell on the Rebels.

Good point. That was some good cinema right there.

I have another question. The rebels had to turn off the energy shield
around the planet momentarily in order for their transports to leave.
How come the Empire managed to land its shuttles "beyond the energy
shield" while the shield was still on ?

Um...you gave the answer in your question. The Imperials landed their
shuttles BEYOND the energy shield, not within it.

I was under the impression the energy shield encircled the entire
planet, so no shuttle could actually land without going through it.

no, just around the base. the energy costs to shield an entire planet would
have been astronomical (pun intended), something the piddly Rebel Alliance
never could have afforded.
