Hello,
Im a late starter!!! I have just finished my boxset collection of Star Trek
The Next Generation. I am no good at writing reviews, so I will keep it
short!
I enjoyed this show immensely, thought it was very good...however, I feel
whilst I watched many GREAT episodes, most of the non great were simply
mediocre. The episodes which stand out as the best generally involved one
of the following:
- Borg (Best baddies on TV ever)
- Q
- Lore
I also felt that The Next Gen has no real direction or main story, it seemed
to be a collection of mini stories, none of them really related to one
another.
This may sound negative, but I absolutely loved watching! I am now onto
DS9 - got to Episode 8 or so in season 1. It's struggling to excite me so
far, however the Wormhole episode makes me think good things are coming for
this show!

They are!
If you want great season spanning story arcs in Star Trek combined with
action and fascinating characters... DS9 is *the* place to be.

Well, that's mainly because there wasn't a real story to tell.

DS9 got me excited around S4, but then it was just rewards.

NextGen suffered from a writer's strike for season three. It was uneven in
the first season, kind of sucky seasons two and three, then picked up.
DS9 had a similar sophomore slump. Terrific pilot, then uneven for the
first two seasons: some good Trek stories, alternating with some stupid
Bajoran soap opera stories. The writers clearly had no handle on the
characters, and Odo was just a straight out mistake: a fantasy character in
a hard sci-fi series. Even though Auberjonois was an incredible actor, the
writers couldn't figure out what to do with him. Quark was an even bigger
disaster, as characters go.
When Michael Dorn (Worf) joined the case, it went back to (mostly) actual
sci-fi and action-adventure stories. The writers found a handle on Sisko,
Kira, and some of the minor characters (most notably, Garak). The show
still had some occaisonal clunkers, and they never did figure out what to do
with Dax - a real shame, given Terry Farrel's obvious talent for both comedy
and drama.
DS9 episodes can often be judged by the dramatic chops of the guest stars:
you see Tony Todd in the credits, you're guaranteed a terrific story and
great acting. You see the very talented Wallace Shawn, and you know the
writers will milk it for cheap laughs and you might as well skip it.
My advice: skip Voyager entirely, and as for Enterprise, watch only the
fourth (and last) season.

If you want to watch a great Sci-Fi series, watch X-Files. I Love Next
Generation, but X-Files clearly was the better show

Not in my book.
The first three to five years The X-Files had some interesting and good
sides to it.
After that it took a dramatic nose dive.
And it used to be one of my favorite 'Earth based' genre shows.

Well TNG sucked the 1st 2 years. Got better during season 3....Peaked
during 4 5 6.....and went downhill during 7. So X-Files had a few extra
better seasons. So X-Files was the better show.

Trying to have an overall direction was probably what killed DS9. The
Original Series had individual episodes, but continuing characters. That
seems to be the ideal balance for audiences, even if some TV shows
nowadays, such as 24, are able to violate that rule in one direction -
and shows like Playhouse 90, The Outer Limits, and The Twilight Zone are
fondly remembered and acclaimed despite violating it in the other
direction.
