Daniel Craig: Armed, Dangerous and Ready to Fill Bond's Shoes
March 9, 2006

It's a license to thrill! Only "Extra" has your first ever look at the
controversial new 007, British import Daniel Craig.

How did Craig handle the reaction from hard core Bond fans, who were
less than satisfied with him being chosen a the new 007 replacement?
"We're making a movie, and I think we're making a really good movie,"
Craig said. "When it comes out, if they still feel the same way then,
you know, screw them!"

Craig also took on the rumors that his new 007 would be the first to
bare it all onscreen. But Tanika got the truth from the man himself.
"We can't go fully monty in Bond," Craig revealed. But only,"Because we
can't get the rating," explains a playful Craig.

Okay, so there won't be any nudity. But what does a girl need to do to
snag the coveted role of Bond's infamous babe?

"Talk to Barbara," Craig joked. "I don't have the hook-up!"

While Tanika can't find out how to be deemed a Bond girl, she can take
tips from real Bond girls Caterina Murino and Eva Green, who's been
polishing her British accent.

"It's exciting, very exciting," Green confessed, in nearly perfect
British brogue. And Bond's other sidekick, Murino, didn't want to
reveal too much either, but she did hint she may win Bond's heart: "I
kiss him!" she slipped.

The new 007 will slay the ladies and a few bad guys when "Casino
Royale" hits theaters this November.

Bravo, nothing bad to say. Everything is fine in Bond land. For the first
time in 35 years we might have a rugged, tough guy for Bond. It's about
time. He still has to do the suave stuff, though. Connery was so good at
mixing the two elements. But I'm encouraged by what I've seen thus far. I'm
starting to get psyched for this !!!

It is really disappointing to read "hard core Bond fans" are less than
satisfied, as if that term is all-inclusive.

I'd guess that there are *many* more fans who do not feel this way, and are
exhilirated with most every decision regarding the project that have been
revealed. I'm not thinking I am alone.

Anyway, I agree with Mr. Craig. Screw them.

Tom Zielinski
"...Bond's eyes narrowed. He knew, at some point, he would have to slay this
particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that "screw them" is almost certainly American slang..."

Will and Tom are both wrong. Craig doesn't look remotely Bond like nor
does he have a heroic or charming face:

Fleming's Bond never looked like that. Sorry, but it's time to stop
accepting things just because they're given to you. Eon should have
found a more suitable looking candidate and it's an insult to call
Casino Royale a Bond Begins Bond film when Craig looks older than any
of the other Bond actors when they made their first films. Go look at
that looped film and you see Craig looks old for his age.

People will reject Craig not because he's a bad actor but because he's
miscast. Physically miscast, and, I would argue, lacking the charisma
of Bond.

There is a repeat of Craig's Archangel on UK BBC tv this month. He is
completely lacking any charisma. Totally devoid of it. Three hours of
zero charm. If he is anything like that in CR he is 100 percent doomed
to failure.

OK, I'm officially convinced that he's the man for the job.

No, not sarcasm - it's exactly how the, like, two guys, who're against him
should be viewed. He'll handle it.

And the wife says the pics and footage of Craig's package in the sea has
convinced her...

Absolutely. WTF constitutes a 'hardcore Bond fan' and who's
qualified to judge who does or doesn't fit this description? Since
when have the views of Bond fans been homogenous anyway? I mean, I
consider both myself and, for example, Mike Feeney to be pretty
hardcore fans, and yet our views on Bond are often diametrically
opposed. Jeez, all it takes is a couple of rabid Brosnan-stalkers to
set up a crappy anti-Craig website, and a bunch of entertainment
'journalists' fall for their claim that the majority of Bond fans
are in uproar.

> Anyway, I agree with Mr. Craig. Screw them.

Yeah, and good for him that he said that. If I was in his position I
suspect I'd have used a stronger word than 'screw'.

A brief postscript:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4792242.stm

Note the choice of words at the beginning of the second paragraph - 'a
*small* band of fans'. A detail, but not, in my view, an insignificant
one. It seems that the Beeb at least are developing a sense of
perspective about what's been going on.

Not if we take Tom's remarks as a TWINE reference...
