Casino PTS to be in black and white [message #233183] Do, 09 März 2006 20:41

"Casino Royale" will feature the first ever black and white sequence in
a James Bond film during the pre-titles sequence, according to Empire
Online:
http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=18246

"Details are emerging of the set-up of Casino Royale, the new Bond
film, as filming continues in the Bahamas - and we have the scoop on
a few of the details from our intrepid reporter onset, the jammy git.
There are a few minor spoilers below, so don't read any further if
you want to avoid all knowledge.

First of all, the traditional pre-credits action sequence will show how
Bond got his 00-rating, showing the (required) two kills that he
carries out. We'd heard that - but the news that it is in black and
white is new, as is the news that the change to colour will come at a
crucial point.

That whole sequence, however, is backstory, aimed at giving the film a
back to basics feel. There will be no Q and no gadgets, and since
it's the first book, Bond makes mistakes and develops into the
character we all know.

Although the first part is wildly different to the book (there's a lot
more scuba diving!), director Martin Campbell claims the film is very
faithful to the book's third act - which, as readers will know,
contains some rather shocking scenes. In the meantime we can expect
lots of handheld cameras and equally un-Bond lighting/camerawork.

The story is this: after earning his 00, Bond goes to Madagascar to spy
on a terrorist. Things go wrong and Bond sets up his own mission,
heading to the Bahamas where he meets a man who is involved with Le
Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), banker to the world's terrorists. Le Chiffre
(as in the book) is trying to raise money by gambling, and is taking
part in a high-stakes poker game in Montenegro. Bond goes after him,
accompanied by Vesper Lind (Eva Green) who has been assigned to him by
M (Judi Dench, who gets a quick trip to de Bahamas). Much as in On Her
Majesty's Secret Service, Bond falls in love, the big girl's blouse.

Everyone on board was saying the franchise had become too fantastical,
so the emphasis here is on a return to stunt work, less CG and more
credibility. We'll keep you up to date on any and all Bond news
between now and release."

--- Good news and bad news. The good news is that I like the idea of
going black-and-white for the PCS. That's one I hadn't even thought
of, but should have, of course. The bad news is "we can expect lots of
handheld cameras and equally un-Bond lighting/camerawork." I hate
jerkycams! In fact, as much as I liked the Bourne films, I found they
fell apart on the action sequences went they went jerkycam.
Jerkycamming is just the lazy director's way of shooting things. It's
like the difference between classical art and abstract art. I want to
know what I'm seeing and feel what I'm seeing and be able to lose
myself in what I'm seeing, not try to play guessing games as to what
the hell is going on. As for the lighting aspect, that will depend on
what kind of lighting they're thinking of using, but unless it's going
to be a film noir, I hate dark lighting. Sheesh, and just when I was
willing to give Craig a fair chance to prove himself, here EON goes
making it all really difficult for me to do that by going berserk in
trying to reach out to some elusive brain-dead MTV crowd - who,
incidentally, probably don't even watch MTV these days anymore. Seems
that once again EON is just going to be all over the map with CR and
not focus on the things that really matter. I seriously think we're in
the ADHD era of Bond with Barb and Mike.

Tosh. It must suck to be so negative and unhappy. The new direction was
completely unexpected by me, but everything I've seen and heard about the
film has been superb.

Bring on "Casino Royale." May it be a noble experiment that succeeds beyond
anyone's dreams.

--- Everything? Superb? Either I'm unrealistically negative or your
unrealistically positive. The only thing I've found that they've come
up with that's different and that'd be interesting to see in CR is a
black-and-white PCS. Choosing Craig is different, too, but I can't say
that I anticipate seeing him in the role. If he does a good job of it,
then all the kudos to him and I'll be one of the first in line to cheer
him on. But as for "everything" being superb ... well, let's just say
I'm not won over easily by what they're toying around with. There are
Bond fans who desperately crave to see a new wave 007 succeed, and
there are Bond fans who are a bit jaded by all the hype of "new and
improved" only to have seen too often that most things retooled only
tend to end up worse than the old and worn. Get past the hype to see
what you should be seeing and not what the EON publicity machine wants
you to believe you're seeing. The proof will be in the pudding,
anyway. Till then everybody can express only hopes and doubts.

--- Well, I certainly would hope it will be better than the spoof.

"The EON publicity machine" -- like they're the Nazis or something.
There's PLENTY to be happy about:

-- Academy Award-winning screenwriter.
-- An acclaimed actor as Bond who isn't over 50
-- Martin Campbell, director of the last Bond film with any character
-- An actual actor playing Felix Leiter
-- An actual Fleming book to draw characters from, for the first time
in 16 years.

Should I be positive or negative about these things? Well, considering
that I LIKE Bond films, I'll say it's good news.

I guess I'm fortunate enough to see what EON wants me to see as well as a
bit deeper.

Take that any way you'd like.

I'm certainly setting my sights much higher than that. So far, I've not
been disappointed. I'm thinking that come November, I'll be thrilled.
