BBC News has published the first official video clips from the set of
the forthcoming James Bond film "Casino Royale".
The 1 minute 45 second report features a montage of action sequences
and behind the scenes glimpses of the what has been shot so far in the
Bahamas and Prague. Daniel Craig can be seen in action as 007 in a
variety of scenes.

In the black T-Shirt (and the way he moves) he reminds me of Connery in
THUNDERBALL.

And right at the end of the clip, BBC reporter David Sillitoe was his
usual snobbish self when he said that some Bond fans take the series
"very seriously", in a rather jokey way.
Having seen the report, I'm slightly more heartened having had my
doubts over the casting.
It's not a total thumbs up but it may not be the disaster some are
predicting.

--- I think you're stretching the imagination a bit. There's not a
hint of Connery from my vantage point. My reaction to the clip is
basically neutral and inconclusive. It's neither negative nor positive
by what I see, so the film can still go either way for me. The action
scenes look like pretty standard dime-a-dozen stuff; in fact, almost
like something out of the intro from Never Say Never Again. Of course
it's all out of context and we're not seeing it from the director's
p.o.v., but so far I don't see anything in that clip that looks much
different from the kind of scrapes Brosnan found himself in. And does
Craig strike me as Bond from this clip? I still need more convincing.
Might help if I had some audio with the clip. Guess it came without
it, huh?

Indeed. When he's strolling on the veranda talking to M in the black
T-shirt he looks very Bondian. The Sun today have now performed
an about-face and are siding with him.
Mind you, it was their rival The Mirror, and the odious Fiona
Cummings, who started a campaign against him when he wouldn't
tell her what it was like going to bed with Sienna Miller and Kate
Moss.

I've seen the clip, actually got a copy. Craig LOOKS NOTHING LIKE BOND.
Not a jot. He looks like some Steve McQueen type. ZERO BOND VIBE IN
APPEARANCE.
Craig will never convince he's Bond. Never. He could be good as a tough
man action hero but Bond? Forget it. It's imperative to look like Bond.

That's really my only big concern - will CR be too un-Bondian?
DC is not the smooth-looking 007 that many are now used to and the news
that DC will not be wearing a DJ and bow-tie (unless I've subsequently
missed a snippet of news) indicates to me that the baby might be thrown
out with the bath water.
Even though many deride the Bond formula, it has been a winner in terms
of ticket sales for over forty years.
However, DC does look a bit more like a killer physique-wise, I suspect
that he may well exude a calm confidence bordering on arrogance and he
may just pull the act off.
We live in interesting times, in a manner of speaking ;-)

I've also read on Empire movie website that the film will use handheld
cameras which is just a copy of director Paul Greengrass' approach when
making The Bourne Supremacy. It's self-evident CR is Eon's version of a
Bourne film, and they're using elements of Fleming's CR to retain the
Bond feel. Tthe actual origin of Bond Begins comes from Warners Batman
Begins, not from Fleming's book. Fleming's CR never showed Bond getting
his 00 status nor did it present us with a rookie Bond. But Sony
believe this approach will bring in the cash.
CR looks like a mix of Batman Begins and Bourne. I doubt it will be
much like classic Bond but Eon is in the business of making CR a
profitable film, its not in the business of making a genuine Bond film
nor pleasing the older fans. You have to move with the times but I find
Craig's casting at odds with the aspirational heart of the Bond
franchise. The general movie going public will have to decide if the
change was worth it.

Looking good to me....I see a lot of hand-to-hand combat scenes which are
always a good thing, in my book. Looks like Craig moves well, too, very
athletic.

Yeah, he does. I'm impressed, because it's very unlike a lot of what
he's done before, and it takes a strong actor to be able to alter his
movement to fit a part. Hell, even some of the screen greats - De Niro
springs immediately to mind - retain basically the same posture,
movements, and physical tics no matter what part they're playing.
I also think the look to the side following the roll after diving off
the truck is very Bond indeed.
Is Craig acting the part well? The sense of movement is all there, no
doubt. Physically he's doing it right. We've still got to hear him
sound like Bond, but there's no question in my mind that he can get
that sorted. Come on, the guy made his name as a schizophrenic Geordie
then followed that part almost immediately by playing an
upper-middle-class English army officer. He's not going to have any
problems getting the accent and diction right for the role.
What's left to criticise? Simply and solely the way he looks. If you
don't like that now, especially in the light of these clips, then
you're not going to like it when the film comes out, and AFAIC you've
already made your decision.
Best
Phil

Yeah, the "looks" issue will continue to dog him until the film comes out.
But if he is convincing the looks thing will go away, I think. I'll be
curious about his screen persona, of course. Good or bad, each actor has
left his own imprint on the character. I'll be curious to see how
producers/Craig play it. But I'm liking the gritty look thus far. The action
doesn't appear to be too ridiculous either. So far so good :-)

--- Sorry to differ, of course, but that look to the side was too
"structured" in the Brosnan manner and not naturalistic enough in the
other four actors' style.

--- As I've mentioned earlier, I'm neutral so far. He doesn't win me
over yet, but neither does he disappoint for now. And this being only
a teaser, and not even shot from the director's p.o.v., one can't
really say how what we've seen from the teaser will actually come off
on screen yet. The threat of heavy use of handheld camerawork is what
just may kill all the action sequences in the film just as they often
do in action films these days.

--- Like I said - neutral for now. Which is actually a step up from my
earlier negativity towards him as EON's choice.

I really hope so. As I've said before, I think it may be important for
EON to keep Craig on board for at least two more movies - who knows how
much better Dalton and Lazenby would have been regarded if they'd had
the chance to make their own equivalents of GF or TSWLM?

I'm with you 100% on this. Show me credible evidence that something's
seriously wrong and then I'll stop giving the movie the benefit of the
doubt.

Incidentally, for anybody who's got too much time on their hands, it's
worth looking carefully at the EON film crew's camera placements -
clearly visible in many shots - to get some idea of how these bits of
the finished film will look.
Far from incidentally, many thanks to James for posting this in the

That's crap. Anyway, Brosnan's small touches and movements as Bond are part
of what made him so terrific in the role.
Tom Zielinski
"...Bond's eyes narrowed. He knew, at some point, he would have to slay this
particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that this is going to be a killer film..."

--- I never got the feeling that he was comfortable as Bond, he himself
has admitted it as much. He always looked and acted like a TV version
of 007 than a cinematic one. He was too deliberate in his portrayal and
there was too much smarminess in the way he played the character as
well. Whether that may've been his fault or that of the scripts, which
he has criticized, who knows? Could be both. And the so-called small
touches and movements he may've projected do not make him a Bond
overall, just a fleeting allusion of one.
