I reread a couple of Bond books recently, and I noticed how often an
element of coincidence is relevant to the plot. I'm not talking about his
luck in the casino, which is often a matter of experience and patience.
But consider this:
* Bond meets Drax at Blades at M's request, and that same week, Drax turns
out to be the bad guy in a completely unrelated storyline.
* Hugo von der Drache finds out about a missing Englishman called Hugo
Drax.
* Bond stops Goldfinger cheating at cards, just like he did with Drax,
before Goldfinger becomes the point of interest in the real plot.
* Curiously, Goldfinger's victim had already met Bond before.
* Bond goes on a health break in Shrublands, where he witnesses
preparations for the plans he'll work on later.
* Bond is sent to Japan to get his mind off Blofeld, and who should he run
into, if not Blofeld?
I guess there are more examples. Yet somehow it doesn't make the stories
less enjoyable.
