The way your question's phrased seems to suggest that Connery's Bond is
the same as Fleming's, which I think is debatable to say the least.
(It's arguable, and has been said here many times, that Dalton's Bond
is closer to the literary original than Connery's.) To confuse things
further, Fleming's Bond in YOLT is a kind of hybrid of the Bond of the
earlier novels and Connery's interpretation of the character.
In any case, which of Fleming's Bonds is the real Bond? Is it the
world-weary Cold War assassin of TLD? Is it the man who fights a giant
squid and buries his opponent under tons of bird poo in DN? Is it the
wisecracking playboy of TB? Is it the self-pitying wretch of YOLT, the
man who's never killed in cold blood from FRWL, or the guy who got his
00 status by doing exactly that in CR?
I don't know. I think that at this point in history you're no more
likely to get a definitive answer than if you asked who was the real
Dracula, Robin Hood, or Sherlock Holmes. Not that it's a bad or
uninteresting question.
