Live and Let Drive
007 gets another new car.
by Stax
March 3, 2006 - Sony and Eon Productions have inked a deal with auto
manufacturer Ford to have James Bond drive its new Ford Mondeo in the
franchise's forthcoming installment, Casino Royale.
British tabloid The Sun reports that Ford paid almost =A314 million to
have 007 tool around in "a souped-up 140mph model."
"It's a huge deal, worth far more than the =A32million (star Daniel
Craig) is getting," an alleged insider claims. "Moviegoers will see
Bond using the car for chases and picking up girls."
The Sun claims the Mondeo scenes are currently being shot in the
Bahamas.
Don't worry, Bond fans. The car most closely associated with 007, the
Aston Martin, will appear in Casino Royale. Bond will drive both a
classic DB5 (as seen in Goldfinger) and the new DBS in the film, due
out this fall.
In related Royale product placement news, MI6 reports that ad agency
StrawberryFrog "has been tasked with developing a multimillion pound
global Heineken campaign based on the brewers' relationship with the
new James Bond film."
--- Bond picking up girls and chasing other cars in a Ford Mondeo is
going to look somewhat ... pedestrian. What are the Astons going to be
used for? As only show pieces? Seems like CR is going to be the most
product placement-ridden film of all Bonds.

Seeing as Aston Martin is a Ford brand, I don't think they're going to
try to muscle those cars out of the movie. You don't think the answer
might be that Bond will drive different cars in different scenes? Nah,
that'd be too simple.

Nice bit of hyperbole there, WQ, seeing as so far we've heard about
half-a-dozen instances of product placement in CR at most. Have you
seen the end credits of the average Bond movie since 1979? Or, for
that matter, have you seen MR lately?
Best

--- I'm known for my hyperbole. But it'll be interesting to see how
much more evident product placement will be this time around and how
pervasive it'll be as well. Incidentally, if this is supposed to be a
back-to-basics Bond with less emphasis on gimmicks, gadgets, hi-tech
stunts and explosions, CGI and all of that other stuff that bloats a
film's budget, why is CR still budgeted at over $100 million? You'd
think they'd be able to do a more "grounded" version for, say, $80
million.

Why don't you explain to us the difference between a film budgeted at
$80 million and a film budgeted at $100 million, WQ. How much of that
goes into effects, CGI, etc? Does that include the promotional budget?
Does the budget include producers' salaries? Directors' salaries? I'm
interested in hearing the answer, with your obvious expertise in these
matters.

>But it'll be interesting to see how much more evident product placement will be this time around and how pervasive it'll be...
IIRC Fleming used product placement to enhance the familiarity in his
novels. From the begining EON recognized his ploy and capitalized on
its benefit in all their movies. Why is that an issue for you with
this film and not the other 20 before?

Hmmm...I wish I could *advise* EON on the pluses and minuses of how to
spend the extra $20M.

--- I don't know. I guess I'm just funny that way.

--- A plus would be to spend it on a bang-on script. A minus would be
to spend it on 3 more explosions.
