BOBBE MONK , For the Daily Facts
REDLANDS - "Now and Then" may help you "remember when" as well as get into
the "here and now."
"Now and Then" is the new CD just being released by Redlands¹ own Tornadoes,
the Redlands High School-originated band that found fame in 1962 with their
break-out instrumental hit "Bustin¹ Surfboards."
The CD, from Crossfire Publications, is available on the Web at Amazon.com
or locally at Celebrate Redlands.
Excerpts from it, specifically "Bustin¹ Surfboards" and their newest
recording, "The Cruncher," can also be heard on the Redlands Daily Facts Web
site at www.redlandsdailyfacts.com. It is the Tornadoes¹ fourth CD.
"The Cruncher," by Frank Zappa, is named for the hard-breaking wave that
folds over itself, making it impossible to ride. It was originally released
by Zappa in 1963. The new Tornadoes CD was produced near the former PAL
studio in Rancho Cucamonga where the then-teen group recorded its first hits
on records. The studio was where they met and worked with Frank Zappa.
Zappa, according to the comprehensive booklet on the history of the band,
which is included with the recent CD, learned some engineering skills by
recording the Tornadoes.
The Tornadoes today are composed of Jesse Sanders on rhythm guitar, Gerald
Sanders on bass and as lead vocal, Norm "Roly" Sanders as lead guitar,
Leonard Delaney playing drums and Joel Willenbring on saxophone. The three
Sanderses and Delaney are original members of the Tornadoes. Gerald and Roly
are brothers and Jesse is their cousin.
Some of the songs on the CD are "Bottom Feeder," "Southern Surf," "My
Prayer," "Yakety Yak," "Beyond the Surf," "Moon Dawg" and "Vaquero."
From Alabama where they were born, the Sanderses came to Redlands with their
families in 1957. Jesse, Roly and Leonard met at Redlands High School and
began the band which Gerald subsequently joined.
Their first gig was in August 1961 when Highway 38, known locally as the
back road to Big Bear, was opened. They called themselves the Vaqueros then,
but later changed to the Tornadoes in reference to the tornadoes that yearly
swung through their home state.
In 1962 they had the No. 1 hit in the Inland Empire, "Bustin¹ Surfboards,"
which got picked up by a Los Angeles radio station and became the first
instrumental surf tune to receive national air play.
During the "surfing years" the band played with such entertainers as Jan and
Dean, the Beach Boys and the Surfaris.
"We caught a new wave in 1994," Gerald Sanders said, "when the same song was
used on the sound track for the
Academy Award-winning movie Pulp Fiction.¹ "

The movie was a hit in Europe as well as the United States and earned the
group a platinum record for their part of the soundtrack.
That helped the Tornadoes gain recognition again and be inducted into the
Surf Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
"The Tornadoes reunited at that time for a concert in Huntington Beach with
Jan and Dean, Dick Dale and the Kingsmen and The Surfaris. We have been
together ever since," Sanders said.
Sanders said the band has played in Redlands at various events since 1962,
including weddings, class reunions, chili cook-offs, Fourth of July events,
Octoberfests and Route 66 celebrations.
The band is also well known in Europe. In 2004 they received an invitation
to play in Germany and traveled to Bad Doberan for "Zappanale 15," a tribute
to Frank Zappa, because the band had recorded for him in the ¹60s.
Five of the songs from that appearance are included in "Now and Then." Also
on the disc is the Johnny Cash song "Ring of Fire," which Zappa had played
during his own tour in 1988, and Gerald Sanders imitating Cash doing "Folsom
Blues."
The new CD includes 29 tracks with more than a dozen unissued songs, both
live and studio cuts, and all of the original ¹60s singles mixes. All have
been remastered for the best sound quality.
The Tornadoes continue to appear at various gigs, including several locally.
These have included private parties, beach events and in Yucaipa at its
outdoor summer concerts for the past three years.
While most of the band is retired now, Gerald Sanders continues his practice
for Riverside County Mental Health counseling three times a week and Roly,
retired from US Air, is the private pilot for Ty Warner, the owner of Beanie
Babies.
When Roly is away, the lead guitar position is covered by Mike Gooch.
Later this year, Crossfire Publications will release another Tornadoes CD,
"Charge of the Tornadoes!" Many more recordings from throughout the
Tornadoes¹ career will be featured, including more unreleased live tracks
from the "Zappanale 15" festival.
