George Duke takes own theme
By Eszter Bal=E1zs
AMERICAN jazz pianist, composer and producer George Duke performs in
the Budapest Convention Center on Monday, Apr 24. Duke is going to play
and sing his own themes as well as selected pieces from Hungary's
largest big band, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, which will be
accompanying him at the concert.
On a European tour, Duke is not a complete foreigner to Magyar
audiences, although his fans will need a good memory indeed if they
wish to compare this year's date to his first show in Budapest - he
played in the Erkel Theater in 1972.
That concert is in the history books of music in Hungary as Duke was
the first to play on a Fender Rhodes piano, which left the audiences
puzzled with some of its outer space sounds. As one of the great
keyboard players of America, 60-year old Duke has appeared with a
number of excellent musicians including Al Jarreau, Jean-Luc Ponty,
Frank Zappa, and Herbie Hancock.
His first breakthrough came with an invitation to play in the band of
the legendary alt-saxophonist Cannonball Adderley in 1970. His first
prominent solo album, From Me to You, came out eight years later.
Duke has been producing music since the '70s, helping bands like A
Taste of Honey, which reached No 3 in the charts with their hit
Sukiyaki. The album of the same name led the R&B charts for several
weeks in 1981.He also produced albums for Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole and
Gladys Knight. His latest album, T-Jam, has received a Grammy
nomination, but "unfortunately I'm in the same category with Herbie
Hancock... so you know what is going to happen" he remarks on his
website.
Fresh music from Duke is expected to come out in June, but before that
he is available for a close up and personal look in Budapest this
spring.
