Glorfindel knew Bilbo. Bilbo, who was unaware of the true nature of
his "magical" ring, had certainly told the tale of his adventures
while living at Rivendell. Glorfindel knew that Elrond had received
messages that the Nazgul had arisen again and were on a mission far
from the confines of Mordor. He would also know of the messages that
the Heir of Bilbo was being hunted even in the Shire. If Glorfindel
was as wise and powerful as he is said to be then he should be able to
connect the dots, so to speak, and at the least be able to perceive
that whatever Frodo bore was a thing of enormous value to Sauron.
