(((just in case anyone has not read the last book...(I sincerley hope you
have if you're on this group, _especially_ by now...) I ask a question that
spoils the ending in the below text.)))
Hi all, my name is Crystal. I come from a family of Harry Potter fans. My
mother, father, sister, brother and I have read all the books (a few times
myself) and are now at odds.
I'm sure these are questions asked again and again on this site.... however,
Is there an f.a.q. for this newsgroup?
Do any of you think that Dumbledore did not die?
And are there any good websites any of you know of for theories on the
series?
Thanks for any help! Bright blessings :)

Yes. It's posted to the group every couple weeks or so, and can also be
found at http://www.hp-lexicon.org/library/ref/ .

Some do. Not me, of course. He's dead as a doornail.

Can't answer this one. No idea.

No problem. And welcome to the group.
By the way, all your questions could have been answered by quick
searches at either www.google.com or
groups.google.com/alt.fan.harry-potter . It's considered good
Netiquette to at least do a quick search before asking a question (some
groups are more irritable on this point, at least....a.f.h-pers are
pretty easygoing in general). Especially for things like presenting
theories, you generally get a better reception if you don't assume you
are the first person to come up with a theory that has been discussed in
great detail already :).

Paul - you are too easy to fool. Look at the post - this is NOT a
"newbie". He/she/it
1. knows what a "frequently asked questions" list is,
2. knows what an emoticon is, and in fact employs the second
generation version of the "smiley".

We always step on toes. Certain truths we have discovered only in this
newsgroup, just so you don't have to ask later:
Dumbledore *is* still alive, and is, in fact, Ron.
Harry's glasses are the final horcrux.
Snape is not evil, he's just a dickhead.
Snape loves Harry's mother, Lily. They had a torrid affair just nine
months before Harry was born.
The adult version of the books is much better. <wink, wink>
We are all hell bound for reading these books.
Many posters in this group are anal retentive. I am not one of them.
Wake Fish Eye no Miko at your own risk. You've been warned.

Take Davie with a grain of salt. He's one of our resident semi-trolls
here in afh-p. He seems to actually like HP but needs a Sirius :^)
attitude adjustment. He argues for no reason, even when proven wrong,
makes rude comments, and implies that his opinions are better than
anyone else. Your best bet would be to kill-file him, but if you can
stand him, he does provide a small comic value on rare occassions. Your
call really, just don't run off just because of Davie's comments.

Dave,
Uh... Well I'm not new to newsgroups. However, I have not had an computer at
my home for more than two years now.
Most people with any sense should know that usenet commonly has f.a.q's for
active groups, and I'm not sure what a second generation version of the
smiley face is, but it sounds awfully fancy.
Paul, thanks. I'll go check that out now. I appreciate it.

you should search the NG to realise we've had lots of discussions about
that, with quite different opinions about. Me, I think he is dead.

Well, I regularly check the Mugglenet Forums and Editorials. although
some of the theories are incredibly... er.... 'delusional' the answers
those get might be lightly interesting.

Yeah, he's like Snape. he seemed to hate everybody, being nasty towards
people with no known reason, no one knows his real intentions nor there
is proof where his loyalties lay. Yet, we keep him because he might
teach some important lessons to the newcomers...
(Yeah, he needs a Sirius attitude adjustment... Perhaps we should turn
him upside down to realise he wears Snitch underwear...)

Welcome Crystal!
I like to check JKR's official website jkrowling.com periodically for
updates, and she also has links to good sites like MuggleNet, HP
Lexicon, and Veritaserum. There are a few people here that are a bit...
difficult, shall we say? But please don't let them discourage you. I
think that you will find that this is a good place to discuss theories
and to learn different points of view. I'm a big fan of the books and
have read them to my family too. Not everyone here seems to enjoy the
movies, but I like all of them. Not as much as the books, of course,
but I still think they are quite good fun. I'd like to offer you a bit
of advice, don't make the mistake of using examples of things that
happened or are stated in the movies to support your ideas. It doesn't
go over too well here. Only information from the books are considered
relevant. Well, welcome!
Kami :)

DM, I must say that I really like the way you greet a newbie. "Our" anal
retentive standard answers have their proper function, in discussion, but
are, all to often, misused to chase away fresh and eager minds, like
Crystal, who actually have the courtesy to introduce themselves.
At the top of your list (admit it - you had it prepared and were waiting
for a newbie to fly in), I would place something like "If you have the
notion that you have discovered something that has not already been
discussed here dozens of times, you are most likely under the Imperius
Curse."
I would also add:
Our faith is based on the Old and New Testaments (Bloomsbury and
Scholastic). Warner Bros. is heresy.
Support on-topic threads. They're a dying breed.
Everybody here has a real life which just happens to suck.
Getting back to my initial statement, Troels had a friendly "Welcome to
AFH-P, FAQs and other information" which he frequently posted. I'm sure
that he wouldn't mind someone editing that and adding a few original
thoughts, as long as it is clear that his position as "admin", who happens
to be taking a hiatus, is not being usurped.
Just a thought. Not trying to assign homework.
Oh! Almost forgot. Heartfelt welcome Crystal! You've made a good first
impression.

twice]
Dave, I was operating off the assumption that the person was either a
Usenet vet new to this group, or a Usenet newbie with above average
intelligence (I mean asking for an FAQ...zomg it's like Christmas). I
mean, nobody that has subscribed to this newsgroup before could possibly
not know that some people believe Dumbledore is alive, with contrived
and elaborate theories to support the hypothesis.

Well, at least I've been around this group long enough to know that much
about "Davie". Not much of a poster unless there's new material to
discuss, though. Of course, I think all Dave needs is a Sirius [sic]
proctology operation to remove the stick. But other than that he can
play the troll part pretty decently.

I'm going to assume you weren't being sarcastic. Thanks! :)
There are many posters who make this newsgroup enjoyable, and I consider
you one of them. But I also agree, too often potential new minds are
made to feel very unwelcome by a few. This newsgroup should be fun. I
can't understand why some feel the need to chastise newcomers who may be
unaware of accepted netiquette. We were all 'newbies' once, so I just
wish those few would think back to their mistakes when first visiting
newsgroups and respond with the same patience and respect I'm sure they
wished they'd received.
> At the top of your list (admit it - you had it prepared and were waiting
> for a newbie to fly in),
Nope! That was pure spontaneous talent. And a tequila hangover. Usually,
if I take the time to think out a post, I decide to delete it rather
than send. Ahh, imagine the gems forever lost and forgotten in the
recycling bin of newsgroup composing.

My son is only four and is not quite into chapter books yet, so the movies
have been a big hit with him. I enjoy them as well, but always,

Do you actually have people who post theories based on the movies? *ouch*

My son is 4 as well and he doesn't like HP - books or movies - at all. I
think he wants to be the only messy-haired boy in my life ;)

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt! Actually, the only
sarcastic element was the word "Our" with which I meant the group as
perceived by someone on the outside looking in. Certainly, your person was
not being targeted in any way.
Perhaps we simply enjoy the same brand of tequila, but I would have been
pickled tink if someone had greeted me, 7 months ago, in the manner that
you greeted Crystal (totally jealous). I also reject anal retention, but I
love sarcasm and cynicism that comes from the heart.
I find that it is a major problem for me to transport this quality of
communication in a newsgroup. I've been an American expatriate since '72.
I am actually using this forum to freshen up my mother tongue. My
daughters want help with their homework and I can't always cope.
It is always devastating to compose a glib comment or genial thread only
to be totally misunderstood. It has become very clear to me that language
is always a work in progress. I speculate that the people I best connect
with here are those who remember and understand American-English as it was
used 34 years ago.

We have quite a few top level adult brains at work here who romp around
without any counter balance. As frustrating as it is, to me, there is
simply no way to integrate the kids into this group. It is often ignored
that THEY are JKR's target group.

He-he! I work the other way around. I compose my postings until there are
about two shots left in the bottle. Then I save and go to bed. Next
morning I look at what I did and am glad that I gave myself the
opportunity to undo what I did. ;-)
(Actually, I'm bluffing. My constitution no longer tolerates anything more
than the occasional brew. Thank providence that I landed in the country
that championed the "Reinheitsgebot" over half a century ago.)

Since I have a sort of "wild talent" for the English language, I feel
impelled to be helpful: in the first sentence that I quoted, I think
you mean "convey" rather than "transport." It's one of those
not-quite-identical uses in English; the technical meaning is similar,
even the connotation is similar, but the usage is different.

Google can be your friend. Search on "Dumbledore" and "alive" and "Dumbledore"
and "dead", and you'll have weeks of reading material.
"Snape", "planned", and "Dumbledore" ought to produce some good results, too.
Ignore anything crossposted (killfile on crossposts if you can) and that should
help a lot.

Ya know, the thing that is frighteningly similar about Lisa Marie and
Paris Hilton is that they are each usually photographed with thier eyes
half open. And I'm not talking "wink" emoticon here, but a look like
she just got hit in the temple with the large end of a jump/break cue.
What is up with this?
I'll tell you why I'm so harsh on this "newbie" stuff. I didn't plead
"newbie" - I just jumped right into the fire. And about 95% of the
newsgroup think I'm an ass, and 5% respect me. Which is just how it
should be, as 95% of the newsgroup has a lower IQ than I do and doesn't
really understand what I'm trying to say.
All the dunces are aligned against me. Every once in a while somebody
"gets" one of my jokes - makes my night.

Probably true, but "transport" is so close to correct here that his
minor mistake actually serves to make one reflect on the similarity of
meaning between convey and transport.

Thanks to both you and David for your thoughts. The difference between
"convey" and "transport" is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about.
Often enough, I believe that I am posting an obviously sarcastic or
cynical little funny and am devastated to find that, due to a poor choice
of wording, I have been taken seriously and am now in trouble (à la David,
to use Franglais). I think that I also have a sort of "wild talent". I
love to play with words, especially between the languages.
I don't want to come across as having an inferiority complex about
language. (I might also have a few IQ points more than David, but that can
be a lonely place to put oneself.) At my high school graduation, I
received the school "pins" for excellence in both English and French. Six
weeks later, I was at the Sorbonne taking a course intended for American
high school French teachers. I was placed in the first level and got a
"B". I wrote my doctoral thesis in German without ever having taken the
language as a subject. Maybe I just need a little more of David's attitude
that "95% of the newsgroup has a lower IQ than I do and doesn't really
understand what I'm trying to say". Either that or, as we say here in
Germany, "Tel Aviv"; "That's life". ;-)
P.S. One of the funniest things I saw in Paris was a chalk board, in front
of a restaurant, presenting the menu of the day. At the bottom was
written: "High School French Spoken Here." The place was packed.

Well, aside from the fact that you put yourself mentally about most of the
group, so far I think you're not only amusing, but insightful.
I personally could give a shits nickle weather someone is smarter than I am
or weather I am smarter than they. It is not my goal in life to be seen as
the brightest star. and if someone's iq is higher than mine *clap, clap,
clap* maybe if they're lucky I'll pin em' with something cute.

"Convey" has a sense of "communicate" that "transport" does not. One
conveys a notion; one does not transport it. Technically, I suppose it
wouldn't be *wrong* to say it that way, but it isn't idiomatic; it
sounds quite odd to my ears. Admittedly, it's a subtle distinction--a
nuance that I imagine is pretty difficult for non-native speakers to
divine without being explicitly told.
I also agree with David that it reminds us of the underlying similarity
between the words.
