New and Bored out of my skull [message #230018] Di, 28 Februar 2006 14:17

Nothing of particular interest to say except I have just realised
recently I have been a Discworld fan since 1997 and it's now 2006...
that's... hang on ... nine years! Holy Sweet Crap Cakes! I'm twenty
one, it's a damned good portion of my entire life! Nearly half! Jesus H
Christ. Such a bizzarre thing. I know that a lot of you have probably
been fans longer (or are a lot older than me), but it's the longest
I've been in a proper fandom (I've been an anime fantatic since 1999).
Wowee.
Okay, move along, nothing to see here.

You know if you hadn't posted that, it would never have
occured to me to realise that I've been a Discworld fan for
fifteen years, which is *half* my life.

If anyone needs me, I'll be eating Werther's Original and
complaining about young people...

Heh. I realised the other day [1] that my days as a DW fan
are over...I'm a DW appreciator, but no longer a fan in the
way I was when I was a teenager.

[1] I was in SF bokhandeln (bookstore) in Stockholm having
tremendous trouble deciding which of all the books I wanted
I would actually buy. Then I realised that in the past this
wouldn't have been an issue, because the answer would have
been any of the Pratchett ones I didn't have yet (there are
still some, believe it or not). This time, those weren't
even really on the list because so many other books had
moved up ahead of them that there wasn't even remote room in
the budget.

I claim to be both a TP fan for nearly 20 years ever since I first found

But I can't stand toffees and refuse to generalise about anybody, not

I've never understood that phrase. It's not even grammatically

Why painted purple?.. surely the paint would protect them (even if only
slightly) from the nettle stings.. far better to make them run naked
through the nettles and *then* paint them purple so that they can't
scratch at the nettle stings..

Anyone found painting any of my trees is likely to find themselves
strung up from one of them..

Nearly thirteen years for me. Which is - eeeep! - just over a third.
Fourteen years if you count Good Omens.

You can do that without being old, y'know...
"When I am old I shall wear purple...", says the poem. [1] But I wear
purple now, so it won't make much difference really!

Hmm... Thinks back... round about the time L&L came out in pb, and the
COM/TLF graphic novels came out. 92, 93? That's 13/14 years, and since
I'm 27½, that is just either side of half my life too! Aaargh!

What a great way to spend half your life though...

hmph
I'll see you 1988 and raise a 1985, in fact I read TCoM and couldn't
find a copy of TLF, I'm pretty sure it wasn't published then.
You know how other people remember where they were when....<insert name
of famous celebrity> died, or when<insert major disaster> happened.

What about when I discovered Pratchett?

Mine was in a little book shop in Scarborough, a short break spent with
a friend who objected to the fact I spent that evening reading and
giggling!
I then went to see Ian at Uni and told him he must read it.

For those who wonder, over half my life ago. Now I have a daughter who
has never known life without Terry's words She has a Ladybird copy of
Truckers and a copy of Carpet People with "learn to read now!" as the
inscription (bought when she was 18months old)

I've been reading it since soon after TCOM came out in Canada and a
bookshop-owning friend pointed me at it. I was dubious at first because of
the cover, but luckily she persuaded me.

Me too. About half my wardrobe comes from rummage sales, and it looks like
everybody round here decided to get rid of all their purple stuff while it
was still in near-fine condition, so I wear quite a lot of it. But then I
*am* old. I like Werther's too, but I get on fine with young people, so I

First time I can feel positively youthful in this gathering ;-))
I was a late bloomer to Pratchett - people kept saying to read
them and that I'd enjoy them but I resisted mainly due to a half
hearted attempt to read Colour of Magic a few years before and
NOT enjoying it - I then agreed to read one (about a decade
maybe more ago) and have read everything since ;-))

That's why I said "ish" my poor old brain doesn't remember things from
that long ago very well : P

Seventeen for me. Just under half my life (OK, 46%)

I don't know whether any of you remember the very first, original
"Werthers" kid, but he was played by my nephew, Mark. He was only 3 years
old when my sister took him to the TV studio's, but every "Werthers" kid
I've seen in the commercials with grandad afterwards just looked like
grown up versions of him.

Anyway, he's 19 now, and engaged to be married this year, but he's also
been a PTerry fan for years, and last year, whilst taking his A'levels,
he was reading Going Postal in between revising, and kept begging me to
start reading my copy too, so that he could chat to somebody about how
great the plot was, and how it was his favourite PTerry novel.

I only started reading my copy a couple of months back, after getting
bored with reading so many Vimes novels in one go, and as I'm coming to
the end of GP now, I'll soon be able to have a really great in-depth chat
with him about it!

How's that for a great Werthers/Pratchett cross?

All the best

It' a shit life being a student and not having much money isn't it!
Couldn't your local library do anything to help out if requested, or, dare
I say it myself, hubby's downloaded a few audio-books for me from the
computer, which might be worth trying if you haven't got enough money to
buy them?

Sorry if you strongly disagree with the latter, it was just a suggestion.

No offence intended

Might I suggest that this is probably not the right place to advocate
downloading pirated Pratchett audio books?

Just a thought.

And anyway, Tony Robinson's reading of them annoys me. ;-)

Oh, I do use the library. But I'm one of them weird people
who want to own the books I like even if I've allready read
them :o)

Do you *really* not understand it or are you just wilfully not
understanding an Americanization?

It's an Americanization to write "your" instead of "you're"?

It's definitely a non-Englishicisation to say "you're not the boss of me".
(I was hoping to avoid a reprise of the bad grammar = complete
incomprehensibility argument, for all values of bad = poorly written.)

I don't understand it either. That is, I understand the meaning, I just
don't understand how such a grammatically hideous phrase entered the
language. It's ghastly. It hurts my brain, while causing my eyes to
metaphorically bleed. It sums up a large proportion of all the things
that are foul about Malcolm In The Middle.
