In about a month I will have to pay money for Individual.NET again. I'm
not sure I really want to do this, so could anybody please point me to a
free server? I'm sure such things have been discussed before but my new
computer doesn't have my extensive afda archives on it, as they were
lost to my old one.

Well, there is http://news.aioe.org, which seems to be the best
alternative people have come up with.

It's fairly stable - but downtime is seen from time to other - and there
is a 25 messages per day limit. There are also some ither arbitrary
limits, such as quoted material must not be more than some percentage of
the message, which are a good idea in principle, but an annoyance in
some specialised cases.

Check it out, see what you think.

Best
Kåre

Because not all newsreaders display email addresses as yours does.

But the spammers' harvesting programs can read the non-munged (is that a
word?) address in the From line. They're what you've got to worry
about, not other people's newsreaders.

OTOH John's on gmail which has got some great spam filters, so he
doesn't need to worry about munging at all. (I've only had ONE spam
slip through the filter after all the time I've been with gmail!)

There was when I was using a different e-mail address to access the
froup, yes. (I never used that account, save visiting every 28 days to
delete all the messages I'd recieved.) I deleted the account and
switched to using my Gmail address. It doesn't matter - I hardly get
any spam coming through Gmail's filters, it's a solid service.

I used that one for a while. Then I gave up and succumbed to paying
for access to newsguy.com. It came with a new ISP, which I needed
anyhow. I have this theory that if you give them money they don't
go away when the government stops giving them money. Usually govt.
likes to pull the plug when they get quoted saying something like
"Bush is a war criminal".

Oh, I thought you meant that you had lost KÃ¥re, though now I see you
said "afda archives" and not "afda index" :-)
