Tantive IV in ROtS & ANH. [message #228636] Mo, 06 März 2006 00:42

I take it the Tantive IV is the same ship that Bail uses to escape
Coruscant in Sith and also the "rebel Blckade Runner" that Leia is on in
the beginning of A New Hope? If so, a sad end for a ship with so much
history and service.

Yes, it is exactly the same ship, give or take 20 years of wear and
tear. :-)

It is indeed the same ship, in ROTS time it is a Senatorial Transport for
Bail Organa (of Alderaan) and so painted in the diplomatic blue paint of the
time, but by the time of ANH the Republic has been disbanded by The Emperor
(Palpatine) and the diplomatic color of blue has been replaced by the
diplomatic consular color of red and is used by Liea Organa (Skywalker)
since she is now a senator of the ill-fated Republic and uses the Tantive
IV's diplomatic neutrality on errands of mercy for her father, Bail, in
support of the growing Rebel Resistance).

So aside from this change in diplomatic colors it is indeed the same ship,
as further evidenced by it still being commanded by Captain Antilles (who
still owns R2-D2 & C-3PO by the time we catch back up with them in ANH) but
he meets an unfortunate end in the grip of Darth Vader.

At the end of Episode III the droids are "owned" by Bail Organa (by
default), not Capt Antilles. When she's older Bail Antilles probably
gives the droids and the ship to Leia for her use, and so Capt.
Antilles more appropriately commands the ship and the droids, rather
than owns them. Antilles is simply an "employee" of the Organas. The
droids themselves are likely to rarely actually meet the Captain and
are told what to do by his staff.

True, I agree, however, in ANH C-3PO says to Luke "Our last master was
captain Antilles..." so at some point prior to ANH Antilles "owns" the
droids, otherwise 3PO would never say "Our last MASTER", I doubt a droid
would say one thing and mean (technically) another....except maybe R2, he's
smart....but 3PO?

Nevertheless, you make a good point, so I won't argue :-)

"Master" is simply because he's the one giving the orders, and isn't
necessarily the one who owned them. In ANH C-3PO calls Luke "Master",
but in reality it is Owen who bought them from the Jawas and therefore
"owns" them. :-)

Ownership and administrator of a machine are two different things.

Threepio continues to call Luke "Master Luke" all through ROTJ although he
was never legally owned by Luke. Depending on how the Republic abandonment
laws work, Threepio is either legally the property of Lord Vader (and stolen
by Obi-Wan on Mustafar) or he's legally the property of Jabba the Hutt's
estate (and stolen by Luke and co. after Luke of his own free will gave the
droids to The Bloated One.)
