What do you think of OHMSS?

1. OHMSS
2. DAF
3. YOLT

OHMSS with out any doubt is the best scored.

The scores for DAF and YOLT make those movies palletable. In other
words the scores helped them succeed IMO.

Matt

The music during the underwater sequences really enhance TB, IMHO......

Best

Phil

(I also love Barry's tongue-in-cheek score for DAF, in which he
knowingly parodies his 'Space March' from YOLT, which strikes me as a
sly comment about the extent to which the movie was repeating much of
what had gone before. Very postmodern, before the term itself was even
in common use...)

Will, I absolutely agree with you on TB's score. Ambience music is
everything in a Bond/Barry score and that section is near perfect. In
some ways I think it helped to carry it. The slower underwater
sections of the movie needed the suspense that the score provided.

Another example of a Bond film that was helped by the score is Barry's
admirable assist in making DAF *work*.

It's great the way he intertwines the James Bond theme with the DAF
theme in slow places and rounds out with pieces like "Tiffany Case"
along with "Q's trick", "Circus Circus" and "To Hell with Blofled" aka
the "007" theme.

In that movie, what would Wint and Kidd have been without their theme
music? It had the perfect creepy feel that those characters deserved.
Cringe-worthy stuff ( at least it was when I saw it in the theatre at
age 11).

The movie may have had its faults but the music and scoring more than
made up for it.

Regards,
Matt

In no particular order:
OHMSS - Yeah, we pretty much all agree on this one. Such great, raw
energy tempered by the beautiful "We Have All the Time...". Good
stuff.

TLD - Between the title song (which I like, unlike a lot of Bond fans,
I know), the two Pretenders songs and Barry's own score, TLD blows away
the score for each and every movie of the Moore era, harkening all the
way back to the Connery days.

TND - I'm somewhat surprised David Arnold's freshman outing hadn't been
mentioned by anyone else in the thread. Pretty solid stuff; certainly,
one of the strongest elements of that movie. Title song is a bit
lacking, but since Arnold intended k.d. lang's superior "Surrender" as
the title song, I blame the producers and not Arnold for that one.

YOLT is a much better soundtrack than the movie deserves.

I love the atmospheric music in TB.

OHMSS has a new energy to it.

TLD as well.

Nobody else has come close to Barry's scores, IMHO. Arnold's stuff is
too melodramatic for my taste. It seems like he tries to out-do the
action onscreen. Barry was great at setting a mood and letting the
actors convey the emotions in the scene. Of course, Barry was working
with better scripts -- maybe Arnold feels he HAS to convey all the
emotion in a scene.

Arnold always sounds like he is rehashing Barry's stuff to me. I haven't
come away from any of his scores the ability to set a mood like Barry.

Crap! No wonder Min said nobody had nominated TND when I thought I had!

That list *should* read:

I agree. I like Arnold's other work much better than his Bond work.

I know Barry is rather ill these days but I think EON/Danjaq should
just write him a big-assed check and let him do another score. He
could make even a bad Moore film have some class. His score for MR is
really not bad, as is his score (slide-whistle excepted) from MWTGG.
