Hey, Nico, great idea. Astley's voice is ideal for a Bond theme. With
the right tune, he'd be awesome. Rick's the most underrated singer in
the world, I reckon. Outstanding voice.

In fact, I suggested Rick do the theme on the Casino Royale IMDB forum
(before my username was banned). LOL
I posted that suggestion last week.

>From Nick Lowe's 'All Men Are Liars':
"Do you remember Rick Astley?
He had a big fat hit that was ghastly.
He said I'm never gonna give you up or let you down.
Well I'm here to tell ya that Dick's a clown
Though he was just a boy when he made that vow.
I'd bet it all that he knows by now."
(No serious offence meant: it's just that for me this is the first
thing that springs to mind whenever Rick Astley's name is mentioned.)

Rick Astley has been and gone, he retired and became a recluse. This is 2006
not 1987 / 1988. He was also a product of Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

Well, he was the tea boy originally.
Even still, once he left SAW, he did have a couple of minor hits, and he
did release a new album last year, iirc.

Not minor, he had two number one hits in the US - which is practically
impossible for UK singers/groups these days. Astley also holds the
record for the most singles sold by an artist in one year. Think it was
about ten million. I did read that but it may not be true.
He had ten top 10 UK hits including the biggest selling song (and a
number 1) of 1987 - Never Goinna Give You Up.
He released Portrait last year - a covers album and very good it was
too. His voice is a unique mixture of Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.
Check out his version of Nature Boy (the old Nat King Cole song):

The chap was meant to sing a Bond theme. He's up there with the best
singers of all time, I reckon.

Never Gonna Give You Up. Whoops.
I compared Astley's Nature Boy vocals to Nat King Cole's and I prefer
Astley's vocals. Has a much deeper stronger voice than Cole.

Apart from anything else, how do you think the tabloid press would
react? 'Desperate Bond film producers today announced that the theme
song for their troubled film 'Casino Royale' is to be sung by washed-up
'80s crooner Rick Astley, whose last brush with the charts was nearly
twenty years ago.'
Really *not* a good idea.

It's his voice that counts, Phil. If he can do a song justice (which he
certainly can), I doubt most people would care. No doubt Eon will
choose rapper 50 Cent.
I'm sure that would go down well with the 'yoof' demographic. Chuckle.

Some other suggestions:
A Flock of Seagulls - bringing the series bang up to date with the
new-wave sound of tomorrow!
Bananarama - and the girls can do a cameo, just like Madonna!
Vanilla Ice - sure, it'll offend the purists, but that hip hop stuff's
what the kids are into these days! Come on, EON, let's show the
youngsters that Bond is 'dope'!
....or, to take a more traditional approach and please Bond fans both
old and new, how about the moody Scandinavian stylings of everybody's
007 favourites a-ha?

I dunno. I always assumed that the reason she was asked back for DAF
was as part of EON's stated mission to recapture that Goldfinger vibe,
and as for hiring her yet again for MR, that always struck me as being
symptomatic of the laziness and lack of imagination which characterised
that misbegotten effort. (Cue eloquent and coruscating reply from
Mike.) Not that she didn't do a bang-up job on both.
As for CR, I think using Dame Shirley yet again, after a gap of 27
years, might look like a desperate attempt to reassure viewers:
'everything's OK, it's still a Bond movie like you used to remember
them, honest!' It would give the impression that EON didn't have the
courage of their convictions and had chickened out of making real
changes. My preference would be for an instrumental theme, but failing
that, how about, say, Portishead (was there ever a band whose reason
for existing was so clearly to write a Bond song)?

Coooool. Who's music is he stealing this time? The only good thing about
'Ice Ice Baby' was the riff he lifted from the Queen + David Bowie song

oh come on guys what are you talking about stock aitken waterman??
it's a great singer rick astley why bring up some producers he had
20years ago!!
its his very segnificant voice that counts,i mean michael buble would
allso be great but rick's voice sounds like no other one and it would
give the song strong personality!!
i still go for rick doing it.
