I just wanted to tell somone how freaked out I was to read about Darren
McGavin dying. By a chilling coincidence I was watching Kolchak: The
Night Stalker yesterday for the first time in more than 25 years.

I was disappointed that he didn't get any front page attention while
silly Don Knotts did.
I found a very good website honoring Darren and his longtime wife and
partner:

FWIW the BBC reported McGavin's death, but didn't report Knotts':

Is that eerie "death in threes" theory demonstrated yet again? Within the
last three days, Don Knotts, Darren McGavin, and now Dennis Weaver.
Weird.

particular dragon. He settled back in his chair, removing a Morlands' three
ring special from the gunmetal cigarette case. As he waited for the
delicious Balkan/Turkish blend to take effect on his lungs, he reflected
that to sum it up, you could say there's three reasons why there's so little
crime in Mayberry; there's Andy, there's me, and [patting gun] baby makes
three..."

Andreas Katsulas had died earlier.

With fine glaring scowl over his massive brow he could have made a very
ominous Bond villian. Sorry to see him go.

Wow. Wasn't aware of this very sad news. Thanks for
posting this, Tim.
I just recently finished watching the complete tv series of
'Kolchak: The Night Stalker' (all 20 episodes are now
available in a dvd box set -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED). Damn,
what an incredible television show that was! Truly ahead of
its time. So much so, in fact, that the network simply
didn't "get it" and canceled it after just one season.
This was the original "monster of the week" show, and back
in the 1970's when it aired it had no peers. Both 'Buffy'
and 'X-Files' owe a lot to this show. Yeah, the special
effects/costumes are a bit lame but the writing was
excellent, the stories were fun, and the acting was great.
The interchanges between Kolchak and his editor are
deliciously entertaining.
Funny thing is, I have memories of watching this show when I
was around 8 or 9 years old -- and it scared the crap out of
me. Back then, this was "scary stuff". Now, some 30 odd
years later, while watching this series again I was
surprised to discover that the show was really about 95%
humor and only about 5% "horror". McGavin made it work.
His character was sarcastic, arrogant, opinionated, devious,
self-centered -- so flawed in so many ways that Kolchak is
actually one of the most believably human characters to
probably ever hit the small screen. Any yet somehow he
would always find the courage to save Chicago from some
monstrous creature that the police were unwilling to believe
could exist.
To keep this post somewhat on topic, Richard Kiel appears as
the villain in two back-to-back episodes: the one with the
Indian Medicine Man Spirit and the one with the Bayou Swamp
Creature.
Great, great, great show. And I can't imagine any actor
other than McGavin being able to pull it off so well.
Mike
Love the werewolf-on-the-cruise-ship episode!

Simon Oakland was another great character actor; died a number of years
ago.
I'll take good writing and good acting any day of the week. There's no way
to make up for it with costumes, makeup, and FX.
My favorite episode was the one about the swamp monster, and the first
pilot, of course.

Unfortunately, they went out of their way to prove that this season with
the Kolchak remake featuring Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane.

Wow. I didn't know Simon had passed away, either. A
highlight of each episode is easily the obligatory scene in
which Vinchenzo asks Kolchak how his assigned story is
coming along, and Kolchak then proceeds to explain that he's
working instead on a zombie/werewolf/vampire/etc story!
Vinchenzo then proceeds to have an attack of heartburn.
Great stuff.

Yes, the swamp monster is one of my favorites too. And of
course the original pilot film with the male vampire. I
also really like the werewolf episode, the zombie episode
(very creepy when he tries to fill the sleeping zombie's
mouth with salt and then sew it shut!), and my all-time
favorite "Horror in the Heights" with the ancient Hindu
monster that eats people alive and appears to its victims as
someone they trust (fantastically entertaining ending!). I
also like the one with the headless biker, the caveman, and
the giant reptile.

Yes, I avoided watching the current re-make. I knew it
couldn't live up to the original.

"Emily, stop. I mean it. Don't come any closer. If you
do, I'm gonna have to shoot you. I mean it, Emily. Don't
come any closer." -- from HORROR IN THE HEIGHTS, my
favorite Kolchak episode.

And he was perfect as the father in one of my favorite of films, "A
Christmas Story."

J. Michael Straczynski wrote a lovely farewell. It's in
rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated
He and Katsulas and Peter Jurasik had a nostalgic dinner before Katsulas
became too weak, very reminiscent of the final dinner party before
Sheridan's demise/trancendence in "Sleeping in Light".
