OK, I've mentioned this before, but those of you who say Daniel Craig
is not handsome enough to play Bond, IMHO he seems to have the
"everyman" type good looks that appeal to both men and women; most
successful action heroes have been those kinds of people. For
example:
Nicolas Cage (National Treasure)
Bruce Willis (Die Hard)
Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man)
Michael Keaton (Batman)
None of those guys look like male models, but most people think they're
handsome in some unconventional way. Even Harrison Ford you could say
is kind of an "everyman" to a certain extent. So I'd say stop
trashing Daniel Craig until you actually see him in CR, if you don't
like the movie, then you can trash him all you want.
-Frank
P.S. IMHO Craig looks a little like Steve McQueen way back when, or
David Soul from "Starsky and Hutch." Both those guys were considered
very attractive back in the '70s, IIRC.

A quick addition: if you really want to see an ugly leading man, check
out bald, fat Paul Giamatti in "Sideways." He's an excellent actor
(his supporting role in Cinderella Man got nominated for an Oscar) but
you can see why he usually gets the "character-actor" supporting roles
rather than lead ones. Daniel Craig only needs to look at Paul and be
happy with the way he looks. :)

Strange post, FT, seeing as Bond has been played by actors with classic
good looks so it's not unreasonable for some fans to question Craig's
look. I believe the word we're looking for is 'continuity'. :)

Look, Bond is suppose to be the guy that men would like to be and women
would like to be with.
That rules out Cage, Willis, Maguire and Keaton right there.
As for McQueen, pull up some pictures of the dude. Body type may be
similar to Craig but McQueen was a very handsome leading man type, no
question about it.

Huh.
I'm thinking those four guys have been with some of the most beautiful women
on the world.
But I almost certainly could be wrong.

Do we watch the same movies?
Cage: Kathleen Turner (before he learned to control his non-Method acting)
Rent "Wild at Heart", which had Laura Dern (all right, she may not be
everybody's taste but she's a favorite of mine), Diane Ladd, Isabella
Rossellini (Ingrid Bergman's daughter), and Sherilyn Fenn (she may not be
everybody's taste either, but David Lynch likes her).
Let's not forget Elisabeth Shue's Oscar-winning nude scenes. Oh, all
right. You really didn't want to be Cage in that movie.
Bruce Willis and Michael Keaton... Sheesh. A great many American men look
like them, but those two actors do a whole lot better with beautiful women
than the rest of us. Who wouldn't want to be them?
Tobey Maguire. A very good actor with several very famous roles as
troubled teenagers, not exactly men's men. However, he managed to get
Kristen Dunst (for those of you who complain about hair color...) in
"Spider-Man". Now, you may not want to be Tobey, but how many days do you
have each year when you feel like Peter Parker. Spider-Man is the Charlie
Brown of superheros.
>As for McQueen, pull up some pictures of the dude. Body type may be
>similar to Craig but McQueen was a very handsome leading man type, no

"Leading man type" is a very old-fashioned term for certain male actors
popular in the movies in the early '30's. It sort of described the foppish
upper-crust lovers that they played and a stilted, manneristic acting
style left over from theater that wasn't appropriate to the talkies. The
Method and the Actors' Studio and other forms of actor training was a
reaction to this type of acting, attempts to get genuine emotion into
performances.
McQueen was not of this type. He's one of Lee Strasberg's most famous
students.
McQueen, a favorite star of action movies (because the scripts he got were
so good), still has a working-class look to him, not a leading-man type.
Paul Newman, on the other hand, played both working-class types and
wealthier men in his career.

And the lovely Diane Kruger in "National Treasure," Bridget Fonda in
"It had to be You," Tea Leoni in "The Family Man," we could go on and
on.

He also got Charlize Theron in "The Cider House Rules." Talk about
winning the lottery. :)
Most women like him, I think, because of his "boyish charm," so to
speak (even though he's 30 now).

Actually, Cage won the Oscar in "Leaving Las Vegas." Shue got
nominated for an Oscar but didn't win.
Also forgot about Cage romancing drop-dead-gorgeous Bridget Moynahan in
"Lord of War." Most guys would have loved to be Cage there (lack of
morals and weapon-selling notwithstanding).
Point is, you don't have to look like a male model to be a great
leading man in the movies. You just need to be able to appeal to both
sexes convincingly, which Cage is able to do in spades. Daniel Craig
might be able to do the same thing in CR, we'll have to wait to find
out.
-Frank
P.S. In real life, Bridget Moynahan is dating male-model-looking
Patriots QB Tom Brady, who's nearly a decade younger than her. Well,
I guess women can be shallow, too. ;-)

Oops! You're right. Annette Benning did win the Oscar for best supporting
nudity for "The Grifters". The Academy simply doesn't appreciate the

Bad movie or not (I personally enjoyed it immensely, Jerry Bruckheimer
produces action movies very well)
"National Treasure" was a tremendous box-office success. Nicolas
Cage has been in several successful Jerry Bruckheimer movies, the two
seem to make a great team.

Whoops, mistitled the movie. Didn't realize the movie was based on a
true story. Anyway, you know in the movies they've want the audience
to have someone to root for and root against. I guess the TPTB chose
Bridget to root for and Rosie to root against.

George Almond (the cover designer of Ian Fleming's novels) made a
portrait of the Bond-of-the-novels in the early fifties. That Bond
('the real one' as I like to call him) hardly has 'classic good looks'.
When the protagonist in the Spy Who Loved Me meets Bond for the first
time, she's scared and notes he looks a bit like a gangster (scar, cold
eyes). If were going back to the books, which, given the fact Ian
Fleming's debut is the basis for the screenplay, we're doing, an 007
without classic good looks may not be such a bad idea.

I suggest you read the John McClusky Daily Express newspaper strips or
the Titan book reprints. Bond is a classically handsome man and
McClusky's image of Bond was *approved* by Mr Ian Fleming. That's how
Fleming imagined his character and it's the best pictorial evidence
we've got.

Well said. The whole "classic good looks" thing is a farce. He's supposed
to look hard-edged, not heart-throbbish.

Er...that's completely wrong.
Ian Fleming wanted Roger Moore to play Bond - not hard-edged.
Ian Fleming wanted Cary Grant to play Bond - not hard-edged.
Ian Fleming wanted David Niven to play Bond - not hard-edged.
I believe James Mason was another actor Fleming considered for Bond.

Why does Miss Perez have a career? Someone must find her amusing, but I
sure don't.
Remember the New Your Post headline: Cop Gives Waitress $2 million Tip.
That was a real headline.
That movie was fun (in the scenes without Miss Perez).

Errr...I'm not sure what you mean. Craig is not a civil servant, nor are
the four actors mentioned. But they HAVE played:
Bruce Willis - NY cop, boxer, ghost, various civil servants (LA detective,
FBI agent, police negotiator)
Nicolas Cage - Las Vegas drunk, bakery worker, various civil servants
(sheriff, Secret Service agent)
Michael Keaton - drunken real estate agent, mr. mom, morgue attendant,
apparition, various civil servants (DEA Agent, cops)
Tobey Maguire - student, jockey, beagle.
I'm pretty sure Craig will have (and has had) his pick of women.. As will
his character as a civil servant be attractive to the opposite sex.

I swear on my parents' lives, my cat's life that I am not this new
SCOJO. I am scojo (the real one) but I post as LA LA CUPCAKE. My
username is not SCOJO. It's LA LA CUPCAKE.
It's some guy who's been impersonating me for months. When he's bored
he pops up and makes a post, usually to say how sad I am or how much I
love Hugh Jackman or I am ugly or whatever. He's rather unimaginative
but it keeps him occupied. Oh well... :(
But I promise you, the guy that posts as SCOJO or ULTIMATE SCOJO, or
whatever name he thinks up, IS NOT ME.
I've also had someone impersonating me on another Bond forum. All a bit
odd but there we are. Guess infamy has its downside.

FWIW I think the earlier message was somebody impersonating the troll
in a misguided attempt at satire - misguided because all it's done is
to provoke yet more posts from the genuine article.
Anyway, the last thing we need is to have two bloody Scojos wasting our
