OK, I've mentioned this in a previous post, but after that silly
petition, it's worth bringing up again...
As much as I enjoyed Pierce Brosnan in his four Bond movies, and as
unhappy as I was that they Eon would get rid of him right after his
last Bond film became the biggest box office success in Bond movie
history (DAD grossed $161 million domestically and $431 worldwide) and
replace him with someone who's almost a complete unknown in the U.S.,
these anti-
Craig protesters really need to get a life. They're trashing and
pre-judging Craig before they've even seen the movie. I'd suggest
they wait and see the movie before they make any judgements. Who
knows, it might actually do what "Batman Begins" did for the Batman
franchise. If they don't like the movie or Craig AFTER they see CR,
they can make all the protests they want.
Anyway, for the "Craig is ugly" people, I've seen a few photos of him,
and while he certainly doesn't look like a male model like Brosnan,
IMHO he's got the rugged "everyman"-type good looks for that can be
very successful and appealing to both sexes as an action hero. Just
look at Nicolas Cage (National Treasure), Bruce Willis (Die Hard),
Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) or Michael Keaton (Batman), even Harrison
Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) to a certain extent. None of those
people look like male-models, but they're all handsome in a some type
of unconventional way. If you really want to see an really ugly
leading man, I suggest you check out bald, fat Paul Giamatti in
Sideways, once you see him on screen, you can see why he's been a
supporting character most of his career (albeit a very good one, as he
was in Cinderella Man). I know Sideways isn't an action movie, but
you get the idea.
Craig reminds me of Steve McQueen way back when, or David Soul from
"Starsky and Hutch;" both were big "heartthrobs" back in their heyday.
For all we know, he could be the second coming of Sean Connery; we'll
have to wait until November whether Eon was right or whether they made
a mistake that can kill a franchise for years (Batman and Robin or
Rocky V, anyone?). Stay tuned.
