.....ever to appear in a Bond film. Give me three candidates. Sorry if I'm
boring you with my 'Best of" lists, but I like to hear what other Bond fans
have to say......and it's a whole lot better than analyzing 1/3 of a
possible CR script ;-)
1) J.W. Pepper
2) Jaws' girlfriend, whatever her name is....
3) Mary Goodnight

Only three? Well, here's what grinds my gears at the moment:
1. 'R' in TWINE. I like a hell of a lot about the film, but the cheap
slapstick of that scene, worthy of the worst Moore effort, makes me
cringe every time. I was both happy and amazed that Cleese managed to
redeem himself so well in DAD.
2. Bibi in FYEO. Unneccessary. Could have been written around or
written out. IMHO she served only to remind audiences of the fact that
Moore was starting to look his age, about which I recall there was a
lot of comment at the time. If Bond hadn't been faced with a girl who
he had to reject because he felt she was too young, perhaps some of
that criticism wouldn't have happened.
3. Jaws. Three or four minutes of genuine menace, everything else a
pale imitation of Wile E Coyote. IMHO Chuck Jones' 'Roadrunner'
cartoons are works of genius, so poor cousins like Jaws and the movie
'Cactus Jack' don't cut much ice with me. In addition, the steel balls
gag in MR ranks third only to 'Play it again, Sam' and the
double-taking pigeon in that movie's huge catalogue of crimes against
Fleming.
NSNA bonus: Nigel Small-Fawcett. 'Nuff said.
Best

Yes, she was pretty ridiculous in that one. Although I liked Bond's line
about buying her an ice cream, lol

Bouvar(d): I've seen both, but I think 'Bouvard' may be more common.
'Boutier' is an interesting TB/LTK Freudian slip :-)

My mistake. I just looked at the DVD and the credits list 'Madame
Boitier', despite the pronunciation within the movie being inconsistent
with that spelling. Oh, well. At least *some* inconsitencies have
been cleared up and nobody now thinks that I have a crush on a guy
called Martin Beswick.

That's when Carey Lowell looked good. Seriously, I think she had a breast

With those legs, I really wasn't looking elsewhere. (Sorry, but I just
watched the 'Avengers' episode 'The Joker' and think I need a cold
shower. Amazing how implicit material can be so much more powerful
than its explicit equivalent.)

Three most ridiculous characters? How about:
1) Stacy Sutton
2) Mr. Kil
3) Christmas Jones (although, in fairness to the character, it's the
casting of Denise Richards that makes her so ridiculous)

It was a very poorly written character too, but Denise Richards saying the
lines was just too much to bear. When I was watching the movie I was
wondering how PB could keep a straight face when he was onscreen with her. I
guess he was probably focusing on her attributes rather than her lines.....

Those not already mentioned:
Fat Cop in A VIEW TO A KILL
Rev. Joe Butcher

James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of
a character who says: "Say that again, in English?" in a
Science Fiction movie."

A mistake from the very beginning IMHO. If EON had stuck with
Maibaum's original idea of Jim-and-Tammy style televangelists, they'd
have ended up with a bit of social comment which would look very dated
very quickly. However, bowdlerising those two characters so that they
became the vaguely new-age figure of Joe Butcher made things even
worse. Maibaum's characters were there for no other purpose than to
add a bit of satire to the movie. EON's changes removed even the
satire. What purpose does the character then serve? I know we all
love having a go at Wayne Newton, but it wasn't his fault that Butcher
stuck out like a sore thumb, and believe me, it pains me to have to say
that, 'cause it's fun to blame Wayne Newton for stuff.
Still love LTK, though :-)

Of which "You wanna put that in English for those of us who don't speak
Spy?" is supposed to be a variant, I guess.

I like LTK also, although to this day, it still does not feel like a James
Bond movie to me :-) It reminds me of a Miami Vice movie, lol....But Wayne
Newton's character was one of the few ridiculous moments in the movie,
thankfully.

I didn't feel that at the time, and again that's probably influenced my
opinion since. I loathed 'Miami Vice' in 1989 and only came to
appreciate its virtues in the last four or five years, and I still
can't abide the 'Lethal Weapon' movies, the other standard LTK
comparison. Under the circumstances, a Bond film which reminded me of
those franchises should have appalled me, but instead I loved it. Go
figure.
Again I suspect the post-AVTAK euphoria may have something to do with
it, and the fact that there was some Fleming on screen - a very
significant moment from Fleming's novels at that - may have made me
rate the film more highly than I should have if I was being 'objective'
(a laughable term when it comes to expressing one's likes and dislikes
anyway).
Best

I think it reminded me of Miami Vice because it took place in warm climates,
like the Florida Keys. And it involved drugs and Latin American druglords.
And TD wore a lot of casual/light clothing in the film, which reminded me of
the Vice style. I was a big fan of the show, BTW, lol. I was glad to see
them take the series in a different direction, but it wasn't completely
successful, unfortunately.

Yeah. South American druglords just didn't seem that exotic. Originally
the story was supposed to take place in China.
