Angry Bond Fans Threaten to Boycott Film
Tuesday February 21 9:26 PM ET
They're shaken, stirred and just plain angry. And several months late
with their response. A group of James Bond fans have launched a Web
site, http://www.craignotbond.com, to protest British actor Daniel
Craig replacing Pierce Brosnan in the 007 film franchise, and boycott
the upcoming Bond movie "Casino Royale."
The fair-haired Craig, whose recent screen credits include "Munich" and
"The Jacket," was tapped last October to play the secret-agent icon.
"EON Productions angered fans around the world when they fired Pierce
Brosnan at the height of his popularity as Bond," said a statement on
the site. "To add insult to injury, EON cast a short, blond,
odd-looking Daniel Craig in the role of Bond."
"Craig, described by The New York Times as having a 'pale, flattened
face and large, fleshy ears' is a terrible choice for Bond. If EON
Productions and Sony Pictures will not accept they've made a big
mistake, then Bond fans promise to boycott Casino Royale!"
Calls by The Associated Press to EON Productions and a representative
for Craig were not immediately returned on Tuesday.
Brosnan stepped into the shoes of dashing predecessors Sean Connery and
Roger Moore to play a blue-eyed, dark-haired Bond in "Tomorrow Never
Dies," "The World Is Not Enough" and "Die Another Day."
In its statement, the Web site claimed EON did not want to pay for
Brosnan or other high-profile actors Hugh Jackman and Clive Owen as
replacements.

A 'group'. Riiiight. How many people does it take to launch a website
exactly? This can be taken as a barometer of public opinion how? And
this is newsworthy in what sense? You might as well quote one of
Scojo's demented witterings for all it represents general opinion.
David Icke has a website, therefore his views must be reported
seriously and as a beacon of public feeling - yeah?

LOL!
There's an irony in all this. When the casting and project were
first announced, my reaction was to think 'Interesting choices -
let's see how this goes.' But the more petty, vindictive,
illogical, badly-written anti-Craig-and-CR nonsense I read, the more
partisan and pro-Craig-and-CR my attitudes become, and I would be
willing to bet I'm not alone in feeling that way. Wouldn't it be a
hoot if the net effect of the naysayers' and trolls' whining and
bitching was to increase public interest in (and support for) the film?

I read through the site, but how seriously can I take a petition who
doesn't even recognize a photo of Nosferatu on his own site?

The first thing that happens is somebody at MGM or Sony notes the site
when they're asked for a comment. It's forwarded to the legal
department. Some hack at the legal department calls the company hosting
the site and gets the owner info. They then send a registerd letter to
the owner, instructing him to remove all Sony and MGM content, as well
as mentions of James Bond or any owned content. They will then tell him
he has 24 hours -- after 24 hours they will take legal action. Said
owner will then try to decide if he has more money to spend on a legal
fight or Sony. Happens all the time.

Let's not forget that Casino Royale was initially done with fair
haired, long, odd-looking David Niven as Bond (of all people)... It all
makes sense to me :)
Although that version of Casino Royale was never considered an official
Bond movie, it was more of a spoof.

The group's President, WQ, released this statement on the website: "Having
read one-third of a possible script that may or may not be real, the movie
is destined to be a flop. Make your feelings known to EON by erecting yard
signs, creating bumper stickers and calling producers. Although we haven't
seen one frame of the film, there's just no way it can work. Furthermore,
that new Aston Martin has a few gadgets in it - unacceptable !!"

Actually, the craignotbond site is so shoddily put together,
ill-argued, and immaturely written that it's going to do the
anti-Craig case more harm than good IMHO. Whoever the crank was who
wrote it, I think he or she has just scored an own goal.

--- I'd agree with you there. If you're going to go through some
effort doing something like that, at least put in a good job to make it
look credible. But it's a dumb site considering the deed is done and
being done, so it's kind of an exercise in futility and will
doubtlessly have no effect whatsoever on the outcome. Just like all
the "debates" about it here.

I've watched 220 mins or so of Craig in Archangel and he has one line
where he shows Bond charm. ONE LINE!
If he is like that in CR it will be a massive flop. It won't even get
over $50 million at the US box office. Craig has to manifest Bond charm
and confidence as his look has already alienated people. So he has to
crank up the charm and confidence to stand any realistic chance of
success.

One quick further point: Brosnan stated yet again tonight, in a BBC
interview, that he now wouldn't go back to doing Bond, and although it
was painful to lose the role, that's all in the past, that he wants to
do other things, and in fact feels liberated. The whole raison d'etre
of the craignotbond site is to get Brosnan to return as Bond - ie to
get him to do something he says he doesn't want to do any more. What a
stupid waste of effort.

It doesn't matter. Their identities are all tied up in Brosnan now.
They feel rejected because he was let go, and therefore they must call
Daniel Craig ugly in retaliation. (Which is hilarious because you KNOW
these people are all absolute beasts who Pierce Brosnan would avoid
like the plague in real life.)

Well, if the PS3 production cost really is $900, that might push them
over the edge :)

Absolutely not--I feel exactly the same. Underdog-rooter that I am, I
want Craig to knock this out of the park and toss off a "fuck you" to
all the gibbering mock Bond 'fans' out there.

Except I ran a WHOIS on the site name and it's registered through an
anonymous registry service, so the legal team has to get a court order
forcing the anonymous registry company to give up the name before they can
pursue the rest of your logic, and by then, the person will register another
name through a different anonymous registry service. It really costs Sony
more money and time than it is worth with anonymous registry nowadays.
