Nice work, James! Just one quick point. As much as I'd like to
believe that somebody born in 1965 would now be 30, I'm sorry to say
that Wright is now a good ten years older than that.

I wish more people would make the same mistake and think of me as being
26...

Quick shout-out to Mac - did you mention this casting possibility at
some point? If that's correct, given the rumours that EON check in

No, but it's nice to see my wishes for an elder statesman type to
play Mathis has been fulfilled. Giannini has been suggested here
as Draco in potential ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
remakes in the past.

Well, it's not like it hasn't been done before, but I guess EON's
quirky notion of being faithful continues.

I know nothing of Eva Green, never seen her anything. Some Google
image shots of her I've just checked out I like, some I'm not too sure
about in relation to the Vesper character. Since it really doesn't
matter anymore as to who EON settles on, I guess I'm just wondering if
she'll at least be able to project that look of "ironical chill." In
the meantime, the best I can say, knowing nothing about her, is that
I'm neutral on this pick, if in a somewhat favourable way for now.

As for Giancarlo Giannini, now there's an interesting choice. And a
perfect example of how I don't mind playing fast-and-loose with a
character. Mathis is supposed to be a tall and, I imagine, 30ish sort.
Giannini doesn't match that, but then in his own way I can still see a
Mathis in him. Just wondering if he'll have a meaty enough part and
whether he'll be speaking with a French or Italian accent.

Great casting all around. Wright's one of the best actors there is, if
not QUITE what one imagines as Leiter. Giannini? Perfect. Great
world-weary stuff. Eva Green, if you've seen her in the Dreamers, you
know she's super.

Hmmmm. My father always used to use the phrase Lobby Lud from
Barnsley. I can't say that I really know the origin of it though.

Come to think of it, am I right in recalling that Fleming never
specified Mathis' age, or, for that matter, described his physical
appearance? (Pretty unusual for Fleming, who usually describes his
characters in vivid detail.)

Don't believe he did. The usual suggestions for casting were
always the younger, spy-looking Jean Renos, Jean-Hughes
Anglades, etc, etc. Boring and obvious, IMO. I much prefer
the contrast of an older actor in the role.

I saw "Basquiat" several years ago and was struck by Wright's performance in
the lead role. He was phenomenal. I recommend the film highly, for
Wright's performance as well as David Bowie's. I didn't even recognize him
as Andy Warhol. Christopher Walken and Benicio Del Toro are also in the
film.

But I do find it odd to cast a black man (once again, for all you "official"
fans) as Leiter. Fleming's description of the "sandy-haired Texan" as well
as Leiter's back-story would have to be largely disregarded with Wright in
the role one would think. Which is kinda sad in that Felix Leiter is one of
Ian Fleming's best characters, and the very intriguing Leiter/Bond
relationship has never quite been captured on-screen. (I think Jack Lord
came closest.)

That said I hope Wright nails the Leiter role in "Casino Royale", and as
Jeff mentioned, does more than one film.

Huh. I caught "The Dreamers" on HBO a few weeks ago. Well done film, but
the characters are more than a bit disturbing if not psychotic. Perhaps
that bodes well for Green's turn as a tortured Vesper Lynd. I'll have to
re-watch now that she's been cast in CR, and certainly not because Green is
in a couple rather explicit nude scenes.

He'd be great. Easily one of the most talented actors working today, and
one of my favorites to watch on-screen. I've never seen a bad performance.
Loved him in this film (aka "Sydney"), "State and Main", "The Big Lebowski",
and "Almost Famous" especially. Will be seeing "Capote" soon, perhaps this
weekend, for which I hear he is favorite to win the Academy Award. Well
deserved I'm sure, as well as for his body of work. And he's only 39.

I actually really like the Black Felix Leiter Sony tradition. What's
more American than African American? Half the fun of the banter
between Leiter and Bond was to highlight the differences in their
slang, or rather James' lack thereof. At the time, the epitome of the
American in the world was the blond ex-GI. Today, he's a little
browner, a little hipper.

Besides, I don't think the next Leiter could ever be expected to utter
the head-scratcher "hawkshaw."

He'll become a gibbering wreck at work, begging for assignments which
take him to countries where you can still light up in public without
risking a fifty pound fine. His flirtatious byplay with Moneypenny
will soon become nothing more than a succession of angry grunts and
barks. His aim will deteriorate as he gets more and more jittery, and
M will start to regard him as a downright liability. Morlands will go
bust within a year as all their other customers give up smoking. In
desperation, Bond will buy a Nicorette inhalator, only to find his
image of implacable cool is somewhat undermined by the fact that he
appears to be sucking on a baby's dummy. As Fleming noted, smoking too
much goes with drinking too much, so he'll be reduced to sipping
miserably at an appallingly overpriced glass of mineral water and
chewing on a piece of white plastic while his dates get drunker and
drunker and he wonders what on earth he saw in them in the first place.
After a while, he'll feel more clear-headed, more optimistic, more in
love with life itself. He'll realise that he'd had a death wish, that
he'd been committing suicide by degrees in his personal habits, and
rashly placing himself in mortal peril during his assignments. He'll
resign from the service, sell his London flat, much to the dismay of
his loyal Scottish housekeeper, who had hoped this was just another of
Mr James' health-food fads, and finally buy that chicken farm he'd
always talked about. Then within three weeks he'll die of bird flu.
