Young Bond book #2, BLOOD FEVER [message #225002] Fr, 17 Februar 2006 00:33

So, for those in the U.K., who's read the second Charlie Higson "Teen Bond"
book, BLOOD FEVER?

It's apparently already out there in paperback, but it's not published in
the U.S. in hardback until June.

I did read the first book SILVERFIN, and actually thought it was pretty
good.

Just ordered them both. I keep hearing it's the best writing the Bond
series has had for quite a while.

I hope you ordered the UK versions. The US version of 'Silverfin'
has had some of the more graphic imagery toned down.

What do you do, Vargas?"

"Vargas has adapted 'Catcher in the Rye' during his lunch-hour."

I just got both in signed first editions on E-bay. Can't wait to read
them!

I read the UK version of Silverfin (had heard about the "edits") and a
teacher friend
of mine got a trade paperback copy of the US version of Blood Fever at an
educational
conference. I enjoyed both immensely and agree with writing being the best
we have
seen in this series in a while.

I've started into "Silverfin." This is definitely the literary Bond --
with no apologies and no nods to the cinematic guy -- which is nice to
see. The introduction of Bond is a GREAT twist on the first page of
"Casino Royale:"

The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in
the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling - a
compost of greed and fear and nervous tension - becomes unbearable and
the senses awake and revolt from it.

In "Silverfin" we read:

The smell and noise and confusion of a hallway full of schoolboys can
be quite awful at twenty past seven in the morning. The smell was the
worst part -- from this great disorderly mass rose the scent of sweat
and sour breath and unwashed bodies, mixing with the
two-hundred-year-old school odour of carbolic and floor polish.

Maybe not as artful, but you probably have to be more literal with
kids. Great ideas all over the early pages, though! Love it so far.

Creepy teaser, too.
