| Haggis still working on CR (yet signed up to do a three week polish) [message #224856] |

Paul Haggis was interviewed on a US chat show yesterday - Craig
Ferguson's chat show - and said he's still writing the screenplay and
Lynd has yet to be cast. So irrespective of how the film turns out,
it's fair to say Casino Royale is in Tomorrow Never Dies territory,
being written as the film is being shot. All the more disheartening as
Purvis and Wade said it took them a year and a half to write the
screenplay!
All rather depressing. Also at odds with the original claim that
Haggis was brought in to do a small three week polish.

In an interview with James Bond screenwriter Robert Wade,
screendaily.com today confirmed Oscar nominee Paul Haggis has joined
Casino Royale's crew to rewrite the film's script. The trade revealed
Haggis will do a three-week script polish on the second draft of the
script before the January 2006 shoot.

Haggis has been 'polishing' the screenplay since September so it's
hardly three weeks. He's been working on the screenplay for several
months. It's most likely a major rewrite which would suggest the
producers rejected most of Purvis and Wade's original screenplay. I
guess all or most of the dialogue was scrapped.

--- This doesn't surprise me. It took me only about 4 1/2 months to do
my version and get it right, so I don't know what their problem is.
Well, actually, I DO know what their problem is, but at least I didn't
have to deal with EON and Sony in scripting my CR. And even if Haggis
was hired to do only 3 weeks on it, then his 3 weeks would've also been
up by now if all he had to do was only one day's work per week since
September. But then. there have been scripting nightmares before,
Casblanca being one of the more famous examples, and so it's not
inconceivable that something decent can still turn out. By I think in
this case there's a clash of styles between Purvis & Wade and Haggis
that may be proving to be a real devil to smooth out into one credible
and comprehensible script.

What's your new title -- "From a Distorted Genital Perspective to a

"What I can say on behalf of me and Neal is that we completed all the
work we were contracted to do on Casino Royale," Wade said. "It has
taken us a year-and-a-half. Everything is written, including the
structure - it just needs a polish. If you can bring in a hot
talented writer to polish it then great, it is normal on this size of
movie. I an sure Paul Haggis will do a great job."

And now Paul Haggis is rewriting it. This isn't meant as a negative
post, just interesting to note P&W spent a year and a half writing the
script and the producers decided it wasn't too great, or rather, not
good enough to be used as it was.
I guess it's part of the screenwriting process. Rewrite and more
rewrite.:)
