The Bond Film Enjoyment Index [message #224840] Di, 14 Februar 2006 03:58

Thought I'd produce a graph of sorts to illustrate my Bond Film
Enjoyment Index. Seems that when you average out the scores, Lazenby
wins. But that's by default since he only did one film. Needless to
mention who the real winner is here. The index is according to how
much I enjoyed the films and I've tried to gauge them as accurately
as I could. Hope the graph shows as it should, otherwise the
percentages are there as back-ups.

Hi, this is a cool post. You seem to like the older ones best. Almost like
you like the most Fleming type of novels the most. I find it a bit
interesting that you didn't score Dalton's films higher. They are a bit more
modern, especially Licence to Kill.

--- As I've mentioned in the past, I probably would've liked Dalton's
films more if it hadn't been for the mousey, timid Maryam d'Abo and
that silly cello sliding scene down the snowhill in TLD and the rather
underwhelming threat factor of Robert Davi's druglord character in LTK,
in whom I couldn't help but see some sort of a latter day Christopher
Lee type instead. Not having the right female counterpart to bed or
male villain to face can really shave points off any film for me.
Conversely, though, I was more impressed with d'Abo when she hosted
that Bond Girls documentary. She struck me as much more mature and
assured as herself and maybe that's the character she should've played
in TLD - herself. Davi is a good actor, but I didn't feel they really
had the right handle on his character and the plot he was involved in,
and that chase at the end with the oil tanker just reminded me too much
of The Road Warrior. Also, while TLD had a terrific PCS with the fight
in the jeep as it sped down a mountainside road alongside the sea, LTK
had a ridiculous PCS with Bond trying to get to Felix Leiter's marriage
on time, which almost played like a sitcom, as the druglord escapes
from police custody. The latter PCS just didn't work at all. All that
said, I think Dalton did make a sincere Bond if not exactly an exciting
one, but unfortunately one movie worked better than the other one and
neither one was as enjoyable as most of Connery's. However, both TLD
and LTK do rank higher than DAF.

--- Surely, you must be joking, or you really are piquing my curiosity
as to how you arrive at your scores. Somehow I fail to see the
consistency of grading GF, YOLT, OHMSS, DAF, TMWTGG, TSWLM, MR and DAD
as all falling into the Tops category. DAD on a par with GF and OHMSS?
DAF and TMWTGG being Tops? Okay, I'll let you get away with YOLT,
TSWLM and MR as being more or less on the same level, but you consider
that level for them to also be the Tops category? I can understand
some reasonable variances, but these are wild variances compared to my
scores. Specifically, how can one grade DAD as being virtually at par
with GF and OHMSS? That's the real puzzler to me.

It might be interesting to rate the films according to some kind of
"Disparity Index." For example, Goldfinger and FRWL probably wouldn't
have too high a "Disparity" rating (since most people tend to like
them both a lot). Nor would AVTAK, at least according to WQ's "15%"
and Mike Feeney's "16%."

But others, such as, in this case, MR (45 vs. 97) or DAD (92 vs. 5)
might rank much higher.

I realize that a lot of people like Octopussy, but are you really
saying that you like it more than Dr. No, FRWL and Thunderball?
