My newsreader just crashed when I tried to send a lengthy post about the
wind ensemble arrangement of Envelopes. I'm too lazy to type it again,
so here's the short version...
Does anyone have the Songs & Dances album by the Cincinnati Wind
Symphony? What does it say about the arrangement of Envelopes? Was it
commissioned by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, or was that just Dog/Meat?

from the liner notes:
Envelopes is a dark, brooding work full of thickly-voiced dissonances
and chromatic melodies.

I think the public library in Alliance, OH (about 20 minutes away)
actually still has that album on CD (their whole CD collection is
atrocious, save for a couple of Stravinsky albums). If no one else
manages to answer this for you, I'll see if I can look into it.

Thanks.
Two follow-up questions:
Do they credit an arranger for either of the Zappa compositions?
Do they mention the Netherlands Wind Ensemble in connection with
Dog/Meat?

Just to make this more complicated, "Songs and Dances"
was released twice - in 1992, on Mark Records MCD-1116, and
in 1995 on Klavier Records KCD 11066.
We have both of these in our Fine Arts Library, 10 minutes
from here, but the Klavier edition is presently checked out.
I'll either try to go over there or get a friend to look it up
for me, if he'll cooperate.
The actual name of the ensemble is University of Cincinnatti
College Conservatory of Music Wind Ensemble. Yeesh.

So perhaps it's FZ's own arrangement, but the evidence is not conclusive.
Does anyone have the sheet music (formerly available from Barfko-Swill)
for the wind ensemble arrangement of Envelopes?

So the writer of the AMG blurb for Envelopes presumably just got
confused.

On the cover of the Klavier edition (as reproduced in Russo's Cosmik
Debris), it appears as CINCINNATI College Conservatory of Music WIND
SYMPHONY.

Wind Symphony, not Ensemble. My mistake. And
Cincinnati is a name I've always had trouble with.

I hadn't even noticed that you misspelled it. I wrote it in all caps
because that's how it appeared on the cover!
Anyway, College Conservatory is somewhat less cumbersome than University
College Conservatory...

It's quite common to be given permission to arrange pieces on condition
that all credit remains with the copyright holder - i.e. you can't
credit yourself as arranger.

This institution came up again (as Art Tripp's alma mater), so I looked
into their unwieldy name.
