The Electromagnets reportedly opened for the Mothers at the Armadillo
World Headquarters. Anyone know when?

Wish I could tell you. It wasn't Bongo Fury,
and it wasn't the Oct '73 show, and the band
broke up during 1976 and I don't think Frank
came that year. So maybe 1974? I didn't see any
FZ shows that year.
The Center for American History here at U of Tx
has the complete Armadillo business records, should
anyone ever want to come down and do hands-on
research.
This news about the Electromagnets is very interesting
but I don't know how _exciting_ it is. Now, I must say
I LOVED the 'Magnets whenever I'd see them live. They
were _better_ than Mahavishnu - really original, exciting
stuff, and Eric had a distinctive style.
Their album, on Fable Records, didn't sound very
much like them, in my memory. I think that was a wide-
spread opinion among their fans.
And, with all due respect to him, I have found Eric's
solo career - his material and his guitar-god style and
his choice of notes - to be nearly unlistenable. It's as
if he decided no one would take him seriously unless
he played MORE NOTES.

A tape of Eric Johnson was reportedly mixed in with the stash of SBDs
from '74 (mostly) which came into circulation in the early 90's.

As I understand it, it was of The Electromagnets playing King Kong.

FZ is not known to have played the Armadillo in 1974.
Martin Mull opened the shows in 3/73 and 10/73.
I don't list any opening act for the shows in 5/75, 9/77, and 10/80.
That's par for the course in 1977 and 1980. But some 1975 concerts did
feature an opening act.
What's more, the Meridian Arts Ensemble's website formerly stated
explicitly that:
> Semahane for brass, percussion, and piano, was commissioned by the MAE from
> New York-based composer Stephen Barber. Barber's rock-fusion band
> ³Electromagnets² was the opening act for the famed Frank Zappa/Captain
> Beefheart ³Bongo Fury² concerts at the Armadillo World Headquarters (1975) in

Any chance that you arrived late and missed the 'Magnets? Or perhaps
they only played one of the two nights?
Robert Garvey, are you reading this? Anyone else who attended the Bongo
Fury shows?

Yes, saw him in 10/73.

One of those shows was opened by a long-forgotten
standup comic. Actually I think it was BF.

Yikes.

It's possible they played only 5/20, but I don't think I arrived late
5/21. This was a pretty big deal and I wanted a good seat.
Damn, I sure wish I still had my BF poster, it could clear this
up, but it was lifted from my stuff long ago.

Indeed, but their operating hours and my work
hours (on the other side of campus) sort of coincide.

If nothing else, ask on rec.audio.pro. I will bet Hank Alrich will
know.
