That article lame. First of all, that's not Hermione Granger. Hermione
Granger is a FICTIONAL character. *That* is a picture of actress Emma
Watson. And, OMG! She's holding a bottle up to her mouth while looking at
the camera! There's no way that could just be a joke or anything! And
isn't the drinking age in England 16? And she'll be 16 in about two
months, so what's the big deal? A few months is gonna make that much
difference?
And it's not a Snoopy shirt, it looks like a picture of a wolf.

The drinking age here is actually 18, but the laws on underage drinking are
so vague that Emma probably isn't doing anything illegal (assuming she's
drinking the stuff in the first place).
It's illegal to buy alcohol if you're under 18.
It's illegal to serve alcohol to under 18's.
Strangely, (although someone can correct me if I'm wrong)it's not actually
illegal to *drink* alcohol if you're under 18. On a school trip years ago we
were permitted to drink beer with our meals (I was 16 then).

Ok, thanks.
And in defense of the article, the writer does acknowledge that she could
just be posing with the beer and not drinking it.

Yeah, I think she's just posing.
(But I wouldn't like the idea of the HP actors starting to appear drunk

Nothing. What I meant to say it that I do like the HP young actors
(maybe Emma not that much, but...) and I wouldn't like at all to start
watching them appearing on tabloids or celebrity news being caught
drunk or for crash their cars like some pseudo stars - with less talent
that the regular HP young actor.
Luckily, so far, the Daniel, Rupert and Emma seem to have parents who
don't let them forget who they are.

Quite amusing, probably slipped to her by a disgruntled shipper looking for
a photo oppertunity. :)
Besides I don't know too many of my peers that hadn't sampled at least a
beer or two by the time they were sixteen regardless of what was legal. My
15 year old nephew had his first big hangover last year after acompanying
his sister to a party. She was so apologetic to their parents when she
found out and managed to drag him home, dad's response was to cook him a
nice greasy bacon and egg breakfast on the barbecue the following morning
.... early.
It's really a lesson the young can learn only with experience but I can
assure you all that hangovers last longer at 40 than they did at 20, or even
15. :)

And even then, who cares ? I don't get the obsession of the Americans
over under-age drinking.
The first time I got drunk, I was 15. It's still an embarrassing
memory. It was during the biggest family reunion we ever had (150
peoples).
Well, actually, that's not technically true. The first time I got
drunk, it was during my little sister's baptisms. Apparently, I emptied
all the glasses of wines that remained on the tables while everybody
was on the dance floor. Obviously, I don't remember any of it.

The legal age to *buy* alcohol in England is 18.
However, it is legal to drink it, younger than this, under
supervision. My own school used to have house parties for its boarders
(to which its day-pupils were also invited - the half of the school
who were day pupils were still assigned to one of the six boarding
houses, three for boys and three for girls, for the annual points race
which consisted mostly of sports matches, and for the house parties).
And at these house parties, various different drinks would be served -
strictly on a "drinks tickets" system, where everyone got a specific
number of tickets (fewer for the 15-year-olds, more for the
18-year-olds) which could be used to get, say, half a pint or a full
pint of beer or cider, or a small glass of wine. Stronger drinks like
whisky were not served unless diluted - gin-and-tonic, yes, but not
neat gin.
Actually serving the booze out, was trusted to the prefects, who would
mark off (from a list) who had turned in which ticket, to make sure
nobody got more than their maximum.
It actually worked very well. I never actually saw anyone get drunk
enough to throw up - people were actually learning to drink
responsibly and in moderation, and learning that one could drink for
enjoyment without getting roaring drunk. Partly this was because the
teachers used to join in - the house master of my house was rather
partial to a couple of glasses of red wine, for example, and the head
cleaning lady used to get just a little bit too tiddly for her own
good on gin and tonic and come out with the most delightfully
out-of-context misquotes. None of which prevented her from being her
usual fearfully efficient self when it came to clearing up
afterwards - washing up the plates, sweeping up the cake crumbs,
throwing away the used plastic cups, and so on. Every so often the
Headmaster himself would show up, beer in hand - he'd go from one
house party to another just to check them all out.
If anybody did start showing signs of being too drunk, then a quiet
word from the teacher to the prefect in charge of handing out the
drinks would see that they didn't get served any more until they'd
sobered up a bit. ("Excuse me, Venner - I think Marriott's looking a
bit poorly. Maybe you'd best not serve him for an hour or so."
Unfortunately, on that particular occasion, it turned out that
Marriott had drunk nothing but water all night and the reason for
looking unwell was that he was going down with the flu, for which the
entire house cursed him two days later... Names changed, to protect
the innocent.) Of course the prefects drank as well - they, too, had
ticket allocations.
The parties usually started at about 8pm on a Saturday - shortly after
a heavy meal had been served at the canteen, often something like a
good roast-beef-and-yorkshire-pud: alcohol has less effect on a full
stomach than an empty one - and finished somewhere between 11pm and
midnight. At which point all the boarders would be packed off to bed,
and all the day pupils would be taken home by their parents (well, in
my case, walk - I lived within walking distance, and my mother doesn't
drive anyway.) Next day of course was a Sunday so it didn't matter if
people got up late, there was no school and breakfast was an hour
later on Sunday mornings anyway.
The advantages of serving drink at school house parties is you get to
spot potential problems before they occur, and you know the kids
aren't *outside* getting other booze that you're NOT seeing them
drink. And the kids can learn their own drinking tolerance limits,
their own way, and find out the optimum drinking level for them -
enough to feel warm and glowing inside but not so much that one is
falling over or throwing up.
I really think more schools and more parents ought to adopt an
approach of this kind. My own family took a similar approach - for
instance, serving a glass or two of wine with a heavy meal, or perhaps
sharing a can of Strongbow cider, later on it would become a can each
or a slightly larger glass of wine. Maybe a few more drinks over the
course of a New Year party in a pub, but again that's over a period of
time, and again usually with a big celebratory meal beforehand. The
result being, I have only ever three times in my life gotten really
"drunk" - and each occasion was several years apart, and the first was
when I was 19 in my second year at university.
Jonathan.

It also lets them learn that alcohol takes a while to absorb; it doesn't
hit you right away. In contrast, when kids start drinking unsupervised
they usually keep drinking steadily until they feel as buzzed as they want
to get, not realizing that they aren't yet feeling the effect of most of
what they drank in the last half hour or so. As a result, they end up much
drunker than they intended to, followed by a hangover. The allocation
limits in your example teach the kids to pace their drinking properly; if
they gulp it down, they wind up drinkless for the rest of the party.

Snoopy is sitting on top of his dog house (a red dog house) in the lower
right side of the shirt as we're looking at it. It seems to be overlaid on
the image of the wolf. Looks like the American Redneck look is coming back
in style.

I've just looked at that site and it's seemed to have developed into a
"what's the best beer?" debate. Personally, mine's a Guinness, followed

I sampled my first beer when I was 16 and hated it. A year later, I tried it
again (Special Brew) and still hated it. Finally, when I started Uni, I
tried Guinness and I've been drinking it ever since!

I know that feeling. When I started drinking properly at 18, I could wake up
the following day without the slightest hint of a hangover. These days, at
27 one pint is enough to give me a massive headache the next morning. Oddly,
that's just with Guinness. Other beers don't seem to have that affect.
Never tried Corona though.

Blurk, yes. Hate those two-day hangovers - I've had to be wary of red
wine ever since my mid-thirties. I stick to beer & cider these days.
Funny that home brew doesn't have nearly the same after-effects as
bought stuff.

This was 1987-1994. As far as I know, the school still has the same
policy. And the kids still aren't hanging around outside the school
getting drunk while unsupervised. And if they had, and the parents
heard about it... what would actually have happened is that the kid in
question would catch absolute hell from his/her own parents for
causing trouble that they would feel honour-bound to assist in
clearing up and/or paying for.
A liability suit implies that there is in fact some kind of "harm"
that one is "liable" for. Now, none of the pupils ever got hurt, or
sick, nor did they damage or endanger anything else while having drink
at our school parties. At least not in the boarding house of which I
was a member.
(Well, one plate was dropped, once. But that doesn't count, as it was
Matron who dropped it after one too many gins-and-tonic (note the
plural of gin and singular of tonic... ;-)

On looking at the picture, did anyone notice that it is odd the way she is
holding it? and how her mouth is. Maybe the picture could have been fiddled
with. Plus the bottle is way of proportion to the rest of the picture.
Corona bottles in Australia atleast are not that big.

In the same page there is a link to a page with another picture of the
same situation (she with the bottle in question) and another one with
friends and what look a smaller bottle of something else. You can

They put things in the commercial products that don't have to be on the label.
Homebrew is normally much less adulterated.

It's a real concern here in the states, that if you do anything to foster
certain conditions that then lead to an accident, you're liable for that
accident if the victim chooses to pursue it. So, imagine a freak accident
involving a student falling and striking his head during one of these
functions. Even if alcohol had nothing to do with it (enough time had
passed that the student is actually sober), the parents could claim it did
cause the fall and that the school was at fault for serving the alcohol to
minors. If nothing else, it certainly wouldn't look good to the general
public, and that bad pr can be just as damaging as a million dollar (pound)
lawsuit.
Not that I think that's a good thing, but that's the way it is here.

Most likely, imo. If so, Emma needs to re-assess her 'friends'. A young
actress should avoid questionable situations like this. Not that this is
a big deal to most. I certainly don't care. But even done in jest,
something like this made so public could easily be misconstrued by
young, impressionable fans.

Your loss, I can't imagine being wound that tight. To paraphrase a
character from another popular series of stories with it's roots in
mythology and magic, you sound like you really need to find the fun L.

I think it's more that he (Louis) felt the need to emphasise the fact.
Drink, or don't drink - get drunk, or don't get drunk - it's not
something we really need to know - or care about. I don't form opinions
about people based on whether they drink or not, or believe Snape is
evil or not, or whether the C!A was behind the 9!! attacks, but my
opinion *is* influenced by how vehemently they express their
opinions/beliefs.
Anyway, isn't this off-topic? Weren't we discussing whether EW is a
closet dipsomaniac or just silly to pose like that in front of a digital
camera ;-)
