Aberforth Is Not Necessarily Just A Pervert [message #224305] Mi, 01 März 2006 16:22

My mind is as deep in the gutter as anyone else's. The infrequent postings
we read, regarding Aberforth and his goats (Deevo's being butt the most
recent <pun intended>), are to be expected.

What DOES surprise me is that I have never seen the real reason for
Aberforth having goats discussed here.

Aberforth is not the wealthiest wizard around. The only reason I can see
for his goats, in Potterverse, is that he keeps them for the bezoars as a
sideline. He was, probably, only trying to increase production in order to
corner the bezoar market when he was prosecuted for practicing
inappropriate charms on a goat.

I can readily picture Aberforth handing Mundungus a few bezoars, in trade,
and going home with a golden locket around his neck.

Hmm.. yes, that could be. I would think carrying a bezoar in ones
pocket would be something all wizards might do.. kind of like me having
a small first aid kit in my purse at all times, especially when I am
out with my kids.. someone always needs a bandaid or a handi-wipe, lol.

It has always struck me as odd that DD didn't think like that before going
to the cave.

LOL another thought comes to mind that usually does in response to the
usual question while watching a movie (any movie) and they do something
that is so stupid (like in Day After Tomorrow in the library when they
are burning books to stay warm instead of all that FREAKING WOOD
FURNITURE) "why didn't they just... whatever.." The response in this
house is always "because it wasn't in the script". A bezoar at the
right time in the right pocket wasn't part of the plot. It would have
been too simple for Dumbledore to be that insightful maybe. And we
would have missed all the mind numbing debates on whether or not he is
really dead.

Could be, but IICR, Mundungus is banned from the Hogs Head and it might
be that Abertford is not as tolerant as his brother: not even if that
mean business. We saw Aberforth with Mundungus in HBP, but he could have
been there to tell him to go away or not stay so close to his bar.

Correct me if I am wrong but bezoars are meant to work as an antidote
for almost all poisons (being different from a potion that is supposed
to do something else, like Polijuice). Do we know for sure that whatever
was in that cave was in fact a poison?

No, I doubt a bezoar would have worked. The potion may have been
poisonous, but I'm pretty sure it was magical, not mundane.

Continuing in same line, If we expect ONE great wizard named Dumbledore
to be so much insightful, why couldn't ANOTHER great wizard named
Voldemort have already thought about bezors and made his potion kinda
bezor-proof?

A bezoar is a good antidote for NEARLY all poisons but not all. You
seriously think Voldemort would have chosen to use a poison which was
so easily and completely curable?

The only thing to be said about that is that we will never know because
JKR conveniently sent DD into the cave without a bezoar.

All of which has nothing to do with my original thread. Do you seriously
think Aberforth keeps goats only to help him make it throught the night?

Besides, what is the nature of a poison, anyway? To hurt and cause
damage to the drinker. Bezoars are meant to cure the drinker. What about
Polijuice or Felix Felicis? Bezoars have any effect with them? I doubt.
