I just saw that Dan Radcliffe purchased the Black Family Tree drawing
for $52,200. It was bought by his mother at the auction along with a
short play written by Tom Stoppard and a piece written by Iain Banks.

I confirm that. But it would it have hurt for you to mention your source?

The completed tree can be seen here (assuming that the people credited did
their homework properly):

http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/blackfamilytree.html

According to the following sources, the winning bid was placed by the
mother of a certain Daniel Radcliffe to the tune of £30,000 (peanuts!):

BTW, navigation is improving at the Leaking Piss-pot. I can tell because
I'm working with Mac-OS 9.2.2 and I.E. 5.1.7 (ancient!).

If there were only one source, I would have made note, but there were a
few different sites that had this information.

Some interesting observations:

As previously suspected, both Sirius' parents are of the Black Line
(Second Cousins).

Sirius' grandfather Pollux Black was apparently a bad little boy while
at Hogwarts. He was apparently 13 at the time of the birth of Sirius'
mom. One would guess his grandmother, Irma Crabbe, was about the same
age. On the other hand, maybe the sources simply miscopied the birth
year of Sirius' mom (should be 1935 perhaps?)

Bellatrix Black was too old to have been a school-mate of Snape. But
since nothing prevents her from marrying a younger man, Rudolphus might
still have been part of Snape's "gang of Slytherins."

Is Ted Tonks a "muggle" as indicated on the chart, or a "muggle-born"
as indicated in Order of the Phoenix?

The most interesting (To me anyway) was the comparatively short lives
of most of them.
Wizards are supposed to have longer lives than muggles but the longest
shown seems to be Arcturus 1901 - 1991.

I believe the spelling is "Charlus" Potter. He might not be Harry's
grandfather, but his grandfather's brother, or his grandfather's first
cousin, or his grandfather's second cousin, or his grandfather's third
cousin.

One mystery has been why Sirius' parents permitted the Estate to be
passed to Sirius, if they hated him so much. The chart helps answer
that question. Sirius' parents pre-deceased Sirius' paternal
grandfather. Therefore they never took possession of the estate and
had no say in the matter. The estate passed directly to Sirius from
his grandfather..

it's a bit gross that they are both so closely related.

that would make sense, cos it'd also make her younger than Sirius' dad.

it's not very proper though is it, marrying someone younger?

he's a muggle born.

I am not really sure but I think Tonks referred to him as muggle; while
Sirius as a muggle-born. Tonks should know better although she coud have
used to the word muggle as she was comparing him with the Dursleys.

(Jane, you voted Snape not evil? If Black had been buried, he'd be

They both say "muggle-born":

Tonks in OOTP 3: "My dad's Muggle-born and he's a right old slob."

Sirius in OOTP 6: "Andromeda's sisters are still here because they made
lovely, respectable pure-blood marriages, but Andromeda married a Muggle-

Yes but all muggles are muggle-born; if they weren't they'd be squibs.

> Tonks in OOTP 3: "My dad's Muggle-born and he's a right old slob."

You've misquoted her - the full version is...

"Very ~clean~, aren't they, these Muggles?" said the witch called
Tonks, who was looking around the kitchen with great interest. "My
dad's Muggle-born and he's a right old slob. I suppose it varies,
just as it does with wizards?"

Tonks is comparing how clean muggle Petunia is with slobbish muggle Ted,
and then she specifically says that neither of them are wizards.

The family tree recently purchased by Daniel Radcliffe for £30,000 has a
key to the holes - #7 is "Andromeda, who married a muggle 'Ted Tonks'".

It makes more sense that Ted were a muggle-born wizard, as Andromeda
could have met him at Hogwarts. I doubt the Blacks have easy access to
the muggle world, no to say muggles.

I was wondering about this too and looked it up to be certain. Jane is
right; and so is the chart apparently -- Ted Tonks was Muggle-born, not
a muggle himself.

But that didn't happen, since Ted was a muggle-born muggle.

Isla Black married a muggle a hundred years earlier, when access to
muggles could hardly have been easier than in modern times.

Obviously all muggles are muggle-born; but muggle-borns however are
wizards not muggles. Ted Tonks is a muggle-born, not a muggle. In that
passage, when Tonks says "Very clean, aren't they, THESE Muggles?" she
is referring to the Dursleys, as it is their kitchen she is surveying.
She says her dad is MUGGLE-BORN and a right old slob. Just because he
was born to and raised by muggles, he himself is not neat and tidy as
is Petunia Dursley.

You can imagine what he thought as much as you like, but that isn't what
he said. 'Muggle-born' means born to muggles, it doesn't mean magical.

And so can you, Blon.

Just as the passage you quoted does not prove, or even come close to
proving, that Ted is or was a Muggle.

But Black is a wizard and Tonks is a witch. When they say 'muggle-born'
they mean wizards

But (he says, thinking off the cuff here), wouldn't we call a
non-magical either a muggle or a squib, depending on whether he or she
was born to muggles or wizards? In other words, referring to someone
as a muggle-born seems at least a little odd if they're non-magical.

What do we call a half-blood non-magical?

Why would anyone refer to a Muggle as Muggle-born? That would be
redundant; it would be adequate to simply refer to a Muggle as a
Muggle. Why bother inventing and/or using the term "Muggle-born" unless
it is to be used strictly to refer the purity of the bloodline of
witches and wizards?Tonks said that Ted Tonks was Muggle-born because
he is a Muggle-born wizard. Remember when Ron explained the term
"Mudblood" in COS?

"Mudblood's a really foul name for someone who is a Muggle-born --
you know,
non-magic parents." (COS, Ch. 7 - Mudbloods and Murmurs, pg. 115)

According to the Lexicon and interviews with JK, the term "muggle-born"
is a wizarding person with magical powers who was born to two muggle
parents (i.e., Ted Tonks) The term "muggle" is a person who has no
magical powers at all. A "half-blood" is a witch or wizard with at
least one muggle parent or grandparent.

Muggle Borns are Magicals born of Muggles. If he's Muggle Born, he's
magical. Muggles are nonmagics, and a muggle begetting a muggle, ie
the Evans to Petunia, is a Muggle. Not a Muggle Born. Lily Muggle
Born Witch. Petunia Muggle. James Pure Blood Wizard. Harry Half
Blood Wizard. Ted Tonks Muggle Born Wizard.

The second time around. First would be by Hippogriff to the Potters.

You just contradicted yourself.

Perhaps what you wanted to say is that all muggles are muggle-born, but
not all muggle-borns are muggles, some are wizards. Although this is true
it doesn't advance your case. Muggle-born just means born to a muggle.

> Ted Tonks is a muggle-born,

That means his parents were muggles.

> not a muggle.

That you can't tell from the fact that his parents were muggles.

You are simply so used to seeing the phrase be applied to a particular
type of wizard that you think it means a wizard. It doesn't. All black
cats are cats, and some cats are black, but blacks don't go miaow.

Yes that's right, but then she supposes that it varies, just like with
wizards. This shows that her first two sentences were a non-wizarding
comparison; she's being very careful not to mix 'apples & oranges'.

In fact, I might make it clearer by recasting Nymphadora's statement...

"'Very sweet, aren't they, these apples?' said Tonks, as she sampled
Petunia's fruit with great interest. 'My dad has an apple-tree and
his taste bland. I suppose it varies, just like with oranges?'"

Not really; these are all racist terms, tarring people with the same brush.

I would call them a person.
