| Primative painting in Dirk Gently [message #221211] |

I was hoping someone here could help me with a problem that has been
nagging me. I love Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and I think
that I have charted almost all of the vectors of the interconnectedness
of all things within the book. However, I continue to be uterly
baffled by the primative painting seen by the electric monk in the
desert of his home world. It seems (dare I say it?) impossable that it
has no significance. Can anyone explain it to me?

Well there is a discussion about painting (and the Mona Lisa, and
Gallifreyan paintings-by-computer and whether they're better) in Douglas
Adams' Doctor Who script on which he based much of the story - "The City of
Death". Maybe it has something to do with that?

Perhaps its significance lies in the idea that it should be the only thing
in the book that has no significance.

Surely the cave painting establishes three characteristics of the aboriginal
inhabitants of the planet?
They're:
* multi-limbed
* rapacious
* artistic
Which is pretty significant, wouldn't you say?
Cheers,
Sean.

As the others have said it's a matter of who painted the images and where
they came from. They could indeed be natural aboriginal inhabitants of Reg's
flesh coloured dust planet.
However it is also possible that Reg absent-mindedly transplanted them from
an earlier time-period or even an entirely different planet. Perhaps they
wandered in through the door whilst he wasn't looking. Just like the monk
did.
That guy really has to remember to lock his door when he goes out!;o).
