In one of the Hitchhiker's books, there is a passage in which Arthur
Dent says or does something totally innocuous and almost boring, but
somehow some alien culture sees him and becomes possessed of the idea
that what he said/did was the greatest thing ever, and exalts him to
near-godlike status because of it.
My memory is very vague on this, so I'm sorry I can't be more specific.
Can anyone tell me which book this is from, and which chapter? I would
be most grateful. Thanks!

Uhm... no. The reason being that as far as I recall it never made it to
the books.
In the radio series, however, you are thinking about the bird people on
the planet Brontitall, who built a giant statue of Arthur Dent because
Arthur had yelled at the nutrimatic machine for providing him with a cup
of something almost, but not entirely, unlike tea.
It's in Fit the Tenth, that is the 4th episode of the second phase. If
you need it written down, you can get the radio scripts:

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much! Yes, that's what I was thinking of. I was also
able to search the Internet for the word Brontitall and find a
reasonable assurance that this is something that isn't in the books
after all... it looks like it was only in the radio scripts.

Looking over the B's makes me so aware that there is much more than
what I've seen reading the novels and seeing the movie. I'm going to
have to dig up the radio tapes sometime.

Does the hitchhiker know that you've been taking photos of his passage?

Well, the book is a bit hard to pin down as there are references to it in at
least two of them....The action was where Arthur throws away the cup from
the Nutrimatic machine....The bird people built a statue of him doing it and
the but was suspended in mid air by the power of pure art if I recall
correctly.....
The act of Arthur discarding the cup happened in one book, the statue
featured in another, and there were references to it in yet another.....

I get so confused when I try to remember what was in the books, but not on
the radio and vice-versa

It's in the original radio series, and his worshippers are the Bird People
of Brontitall led by the Wise old Bird, played by John le Mesurier. It also
features the Shoe Event Horizon, with Rula Lenska as Lintilla.

The radio series is the best version. Definitely.

I encoded mine to mp3 and brought them with me on my trip to Andorra
recently to listen to them in some of the evenings when I just wanted
to relax (which I find a rather important aspect of going on holiday).
Unfortunately I had screwed up with Fit the Seventh+Eighth so I only got
through primary phase - I didn't want to skip those, so now I "have
to" listen to them at home every now and then to get all the way
through again...
