A friend told me about an "avant garde" musical composition called
4'33" which is basically just silence. This reminded me of a line in
one of the newer radio episodes of Hitchhiker's guide where the
narrator has a line with something like ".... different kinds of
silence, including <silence> and <silence>, the latter winning several
major awards." Now I'm trying to remember what episode this was from.
It won't stop bugging me. Can someone help?

I think you mean the bit about Philadeeleya Soundscapers which it is Fit
the Seventeenth (Tertiary Phase) - on the CD edition it is track 5 of
the third CD.
"[...] It is for this reason that the latest update features the work of
the small but dedicated independent company Philadeeleya Soundscapers.
Their reputation was established not so much with their awe-inspiring
repertoire of bangs, bells and whistles but with their now famous
783,000 bespoked varieties of silence, such as <silence> and <silence>,
the latter winning several major awards. Indeed, Soundscapers argue that
there are times when only a medium which bypasses the optic nerve can
truly do justice to the ineffability of the galaxy. Take, for example,
the unlocking of the Wikkit Gate: Space unpinches itself, and the
silence is shattered in a mind-hurting instant as the key slowly turns
in the lock. [...]"

It's John Cage. There's usually a performer that goes and sits at a piano.
You don't get silence as such but should hear all the other sounds going off
in the vicinity - dogs barking, roadwork drills and so on. It's supposed to
be rather profound and he has won awards. Bit of old nonsense if you ask
me.

If memory serves me, there's actually quite a few of these, ranging from
'songs' to 'compositions' and 'symphonies'. I am sure I heard on a radio show
once that one of them was suing the other for copyright infringement...
There are also various 'blank' books and probably also a film with 90 minutes
of blank screen.
BTW: cool to see this NG up and running - spurred on by last year's movie no
doubt. I last posted here around 12 years ago and just stumbled upon it
again.....
:-)
For the old-timers, whatever happened to 'Project Galactic Guide'?

I remember seeing a film called Blue. It was done via simultaneous
broadcast. There was a bit of fuss about it at the time. Basically there was
a lot of music which sounded OK on Radio 3 but the screen was just a
rectangle of Blue - that was it - all the way through. What a waste of
effort !
John Cage did some other stuff which involved a bit more of a performance.
He invented the prepared piano which had screws and bits of wood etc stuck
in the strings which gave some notes a percussive sound and others more of a
bell-like tone. Others used variations on this sort of thing, like Keith
Tippett. Way back when I worked for a piano firm that rented a piano for one
of his concerts. We borrowed a brand new grand and he hammered away on it
and then suddenly whipped out a block of wood and chucked it inside and then
bashed another one around on the keys. Oh heck, I thought. (But I misspelled
that !)

When I was in art school one of my teachers told me a story about
one of his teacers. The guy had put together an exibit of plain
white canvases. He was pointificating about the serene beauty of
the surfaces when somebody had take him aside at the opening and
asked "Aren't you afraid of forgeries?"

Not only did the original composer's estate sue, they got a six-figure

Actually, this is the deadest it's been in the 7½ years I've been
here... What has kept it alive is more stragne people being off topic
but tied together by a common like of DNA than the movie or anything else.
> For the old-timers, whatever happened to 'Project Galactic Guide'?
I'm not that much of an old-timer (I think Nemo may be) but it had
already lost steam when I came to the froup - and it had it's own
newsgroup - alt.galactic-guide, I think.
It's final death stab was probably the launch of H2G2, though,
originally a real DNA project, now after his death taken over by BBC.

I saw that too, I think, or one quite similar. Derek Jarman, if memory
serves, reading poetry about AIDS victims whilst Radio-3 style music
played and a blue screen on the telly. Kinda weird. Didn't watch it
all the way through.

Composer? What's to compose? Anyway, isn't he actually *de*composing now?

I have a record (of the 45rpm, round, black vinyl variety) which
contains 3 minutes of silence.
It came from a Jukebox I bought and was apparently an option so you
could pay to have peace and quiet instead of Bill
Halley/Beatles/Slade/etc according to era.

Well in this case it's the creation of the concept a bit like artists who
come up with an idea but they have others that do the actual painting or
whatever.
In each case the composition creates itself so that it is different each
time which is meant to give it some value.
I'm still not a fan !

The song runs 43 minutes and 50 seconds, and is anything but silent.;-)
But it is 1 minute 50 seconds close to the ideal song length.

I see where you're coming from. 42 minutes is longer than any of the
songs I've collected, but I have several that are 4 minutes 20 seconds.
I figure 42, 4.2, they must have something of the right strings in them.
Can't think of any that are 42 seconds long though....

I've got a record that came as part of a box set of 12" singles which
has a track only on one side - the other side is perfectly smooth and
groovless.

There's a couple spoilers ahead, so when you come to the first
heads-up, if you'd rather be surprised, stop reading right there
and just go to http://www.GonzoBoy.com and enjoy a great song
instead.
As many Monty Python fans know, on Monty Python's Matching Tie
and Handkerchief album there are actually _three_ sides to the
album.
Both labeled "side two". LOL.
I remember years ago when I discovered that fact by accident.
I laughed my ass off. Nearly.
Anyone else do the same? For those who are unaware of the
brilliant joke they played, here's the scoop:
First spoiler! -- stop reading here if you'd rather try to track
down a vinyl copy of the album and discover the joke for yourself.
On one of the two sides of the album existed two parallel tracks,
so that, depending on where the stereophonic needle landed on the
vinyl record platter, it would play only one of two tracks -- all
the way to the end -- and you'd never hear a peep out of the other
track that was right next to the one you were listening during the
entire length of the side.
The way you figured it out was probably kind of annoying.
Firstly, that album side was unusually short. And you could
swear that you hadn't flipped it over, but why was it playing
different sketches? Hmmm. I suppose there may have been some
fans who were unlucky enough to always hit the same track every
single time they ever played it -- so instead of getting and
enjoying a profoundly hardy laugh, they merely felt that they
were ripped off -- cheated out of half a side. Yikes.
Anyway, you'd think that the three-sided bit would have been
funny enough, right?
Well, only a few fans have accidently discovered the funniest
part of all.
Yep. There's actually a FOURTH side to the Matching Tie and
Handkerchief album.
And guess what? Yep. It's 42 seconds long. Heh.
Oh, and in case you wondered, it's on side two. LOL.
Man, oh man, what a sense of humor those guys had.
In any case, suffice it to say that it certainly must be the
funniest 42 seconds ever recorded in the universe. By far.
Why?
Second spoiler coming up, so, quit reading RIGHT --here-- with
this very sentence if you'd much rather _earn_ your laugh (though
feel perfectly free to skip ahead past the next paragraph and
you'll be totally spared the spolier experience, entirely).
OTOH, for all those who are prone to skip spoilers (like yourself,
obviously), perhaps I ought to do you the favor of at least letting
you venture a guess as to what the joke WAS before I go ahead and
tell you, on my next posting, just what that wonderfully amusing
joke was, and/or let you queue up your vinyl copy of the album
(or if you don't already own a copy, try to find one for sale at
some used record store) and then attempt to discover the joke for
yourself.
It really IS _hilariously_ funny.
It's 42 times funnier than you could ever possibly imagine, I'll bet.
To call it "comic genius" would be a compliment to comic idjits,
as I'm sure most who found out the joke would agree, agreed?
Well, anyway, you can't say I didn't warn you about not reading
the spolier, right? And you can see why it would have been far
funnier for you to have found out for yourself, no? You're
probably feeling pretty jealous right now towards all of those
people who were disciplined enough to skip the spoiler section
because THEY get to have the _far_ more satisfying laugh.
Can I see a show of hands of those who skipped the spoiler section?
I'll wager it's far less than 42.
How about this. If you didn't read the spolier section, go ahead
and post your guess as to what the joke was. Don't lie though and
then post your answer after you took the easy way out -- and try
to make it look like you're brilliantly funny or something.
And for those who wisely skipped the spoiler section, here's some
advice.
Don't read anybody else's response to this thread (except for mine,
of course) because they might try to ruin the joke for you like those
people who are leaving the theater and talking obnoxiously loud about
the surprise plot twist -- right in front of all those people who are
waiting in line to see the movie for themselves.
Anywa, next post, you'll really get a laugh. But it won't be nearly
as funny for you as it will be for those who skipped the spoiler
section. Such is life.
You just gotta have a sense of humor about it all.
It's quite mandatory.

Watching the oscilloscope, checking their music
Making sure they don't use it
Then as the line goe from plus to minus, there it is!
Silence.
Went back over my readings at many frequencies
Every time; they use our intellectual property
A nano-second here, a nano-second here
Each time they go through zero they steal a little more
Won't some judgement stop this theft?

Wow. What an excellent question. Good job.
Nice subject/title change teaser as well.
Very amusing. Very Douglas Adams.
Anyway, here's the answer to your great question:
> Uhm... I got this right, didn't I: You never actually
> posted the second spoiler?
Well, what does your HHGTTG sense of humor tell you?
I suppose it all depends on whether or not you're one of the
few people (far less than 42, I'll bet) who _didn't_ read the
second spoiler. So, which group do you belong to?
The spoiler readers, or the non-spoiler readers?
IOW: Did you read the second spoiler paragraph, or not?
If so, why?
If not, why not?

42! Hmm... that question actually almost seems to fit the answer! Could
it be the ultimate question?

The spoiler readers, of course! I don't even own a record player :-)

I did!

Because I'd read anything written in afda, and because there was no
chance I'd ever actually find the record _and_ get a record player!

I don't know, since it's not the case.
Oh, and let me see if I got this right: You didn't answer my question,
did you? :-)
I'd better try as new strategy:
"Oh. Ah."

Seems to me some DNA fan should release a 42 second piece, just for fun!

The Eastfrisian Liberation Army (ELA) is equipped with superiour, really
really special sight equipment.

My shortest song is from "We're Only In It For The Money", it's "Bow Tie
Daddy" at 33 seconds. "Hot Poop" is ten sconds shorter, but I don't
think you can call it a song.

Actually yes and we (that is, me and my band) are going into the studio
sometime in the next month to record an EP. I think I'll try to convince the
rest of em that we should record a 42 second long song.
If we do it'll be on our website at thezorya.co.uk.
Should be OK as one of our guitarists is a DNA fan as well.
Now, what to call the song....
Any suggestions?

I only have the Tenacious D album with the same title, but the closest
I could get was Cock Pushups (48s) and Karate Schnitzel (36) - though
I wouldn't really call those "songs"...
