The novelisations of the movies do contain more information. By
necessity, the novels are written before the movie is completed using
draft scripts, so the published novels still contain the "deleted
scenes" that never made it into the movie. They can also go inside the
characters' minds and give you insights into what (the author thinks)
they were thinking in various scenes.

As well as the actual movie novelisations, there are a few books that
take place just before and between the prequel movies that add more
detail to those movies. Then there's a huge pile of books that take
place before, after and between the movies that are just "Expanded
Universe" and don't really have much to do with the movies ... although
the line between these last two types of books is a little blurred.

One example is in the novelization of the Return of the Jedi. Darth
Vader remembered his experience of being in the lava pit.

That's why prior to the prequels, fans already knew that Vader would
fall in a lava pit.

Sure, read the books. They contain extra info that isn't in the films. They
may be details that aren't contained in the films. hint hint.
