Luke and the emperor [message #220622] Di, 14 Februar 2006 00:07

A question that has bothered since watching ROTJ, did luke know the
emperor was a force user? Which leads to the question of why did obi
wan or yoda inform him? Could yoda and obi wan havehad trained leia as
well and have them face off the pair of them - vader and the emperor
(at different times to make sure of success).

Considering that Vader told him way back in ESB about Palpatine "foreseeing"
his own destruction at the hands of Luke, that's a pretty fair bet.

Because it would have felt awkward to end ROTJ with Luke whining "Yoda! Why
didn't you tell me that Palpatine is really Darth Sidious?" and Yoda
replying "Oh. My bad that was. Such an old and tiresome debate that was -
forgotten had we that anyone ever thought otherwise. Ah, is that dear
Chewbacca I see? Excuse, young Luke, to say hello to my old friend I wish."

Well, Vader mentions to Luke in TESB that the Emperor has "foreseen" Luke's
power being a threat to him (Palpatine), so that's clue #1 for Luke, but
then in ROTJ even Yoda tells Luke "do not underestimate the powers of the
Emperor, or suffer your father's fate, you will", so that's clue #2 (and a
BIG clue at that).

But in any case it really didn't matter since it was Luke's suffering
(failing) that makes Vader (Anakin) chose to kill Palpatine and "bring
balance to The Force" (thus fulfilling The Prophecy).

You make a good point: the prequels suck and ruined the franchise

The names Sidious and Palpatine aren't even mentioned in the originals
are they? Don't they just call him Emperor and that's it?
Anyway if I was Luke, if I knew a badass like Vader had use of the
force, I would probably assume whoever was holding his leash certainly
did too, and more of it.

In the books of ANH and ROTJ the Emperror is refererred to as 'Palpatine' a
few times. In the book of ROTJ, when Luke throws away his lightsaber, he
calls the Emperor 'Palpatine.' In the movie he says 'your Highness'.

Yeah, but Obi Wan and Yoda survived the jedi-slaughter in ep. 3, so the
lived to tell.....and Palpatine and the emperor being the same person
shouldn`t come as a surprise to Luke in the ROTJ...and why didn`t
Palpatine have plastic surgery after ep 3...??
