London Meet [message #220036] Fr, 10 Februar 2006 22:15
cj_junktrap
Over in the tattoo thread, I mentioned that I'm moving to London next
month, and Erik suggested a Welcome To London meet. We got as far as
suggesting the 18th of March as a possible date but never took it
further.

Would anyone be interested? I don't know London very well, so I don't
have any suggestions for venues, but I'm sure you guys can some up with
some ideas! I'll be staying in south-east London (Tooting) for a bit,
but I'm sure that doesn't need to limit the venue since travelling
around London is pretty easy (I know not all Londoner's think so, but
try living in Cape Town - anything, in comparison, will seem easy to
me).

I don't really know many people in London, and I've been lurking on afp
for years so it'd be nice to meet all of you and put faces to the names
:-)

If there was a decent meet, I'd travel up to the Big Smoke. If it
involves latish hours, I'd probably want to be not too far from my
brothers in (West) Islington, where I could get a bed for the night. But
I could join in most places.

Yes, I should be able to make it down to London that evening. As for
venues - there used to be a pub that was used for most AFPmeets, but
the last few didn't go so well. Other places have been tried with
varying degrees of success. I'll leave that to the Londoners to
suggest a place.

I look forward to meeting you :)

I had such fun at the Sept afpmeet, the first one I ever went to, so I'm
just dying to go to a second... just give me a date and a venue quickly
and I'm off!

The advantage to somewhere central-ish or near to mainline stations is
that its much easier for people to come in to town from a distance. One
of the reasons I started booking The Green Man was because it was close
to several main line stations and three tube networks.

Two different things were happening really - The Green Man changed
management and the beer prices went up so another possible venue was
sought. It has actually changed again and may be worth revisiting now.

A couple of other places have been tried since but not many places will
hold large numbers on a Saturday night. Plus the another issue was the
paucity of London pubs allowing kids to cross the threshold. Barry R
went venue hunting, I'm not sure what his latest view is on the subject.

The other issue is that over the last year a number of meets have had
relatively little publicity and so people haven't always heard about
them in time. Its a little while since there was a large London meet.

Caroline: I suggest you forward you post as a proposed meet date to AFPA
and also consider joining the UK-Meets list to catch any other would be
'meeters' who miss this.

It can be found here:

Don't forget that while GPS station is closed after 22:00 every night
Regents Park, Warren Street and Baker Street are all easy walking distance
from the Green Man. I haven't been in for a while. I guess I'll have to at
some point but I don't think I can have a look for the next week and a bit
because of my shifts. It was part of the TJ Bernard chain which was part of
S&N so the prices are likely to be set by management higher up the chain
than the pub manager.

Although I live a couple of stops from Gatwick airport today, in Crawley,
West Sussex, I lived in London for 30 years before I moved out, which
meant at the Sept afpmeet I went to, in Holborn, I just left the afpers at
8.30pm, and got back home before the trains stopped running. I think we'll
have to arrange an early meeting then.

Hubby used to live in Tooting though, where CJ's moving, and he says there
was a great little pub called "The Bedford" near one of Tooting's three
main train stations, but he doesn't know which one.

Is there anybody who could check this one up for me though, as it would be
nice to jump on a train, and get both there, and back home again, before
the trains stop running!

All the best

Just subscribed - should I post to AFPA now, or wait until a date &
venue has been confirmed?

Obviously a place in Tooting would be ideal for me :-)

This is obviously a difficult question to answer, but how safe is it
for a single female travelling alone in the evenings? I know I'd never
even consider such a thing here (in fact, we don't actually have any
public transport that runs in the evenings, but that's another issue),
but I get the impression that London is somewhat safer. Would walking
back from a pub in Tooting to where I'm staying be considered safe, or
foolish? What about coming back from central London? Obviously I'll
start getting a feel for this sort of thing once I'm there, but I'm
curious...

The Bedford (77 Bedford Hill) is in Balham (Gateway to the South) rather
than Tooting, so it might be quite a long walk to somewhere south of
Tooting Broadway.

I've walked around that area a LOT. My oldest friends used to live near
Tooting Broadway, and an ex girlfriend lived there for a while. It's
always seemed fairly safe to me, but it might seem intimidating for
somebody not yet used to London. Plus it's always less safe walking around
a place you don't know well.

My suggestion would be to go for a pub somewhere near to a Northern Line
station that's fairly central. That would include The Angel (Tottenham
Cour Road), The Mansion House (Kennington), The George Inn (London
Bridge), The Wellington (Waterloo), and the Wetherspoons at the Elephant
and Castle.

The Angel is a nice old pub (one of my favourites) and is cheap as it's a
Sam Smiths pub (£1.70 for Old Brewery Bitter) but it isn't the biggest and
can get smoky so avoid it if you get asthmatic. The Tottenham over in
Tottenham Court Road itself has a no-smoking basement bar but is a pricier
pub. I've not been to the Mansion House but it is a Shepherd Neame pub and
so shouldn't be too pricey from experience of other pubs they own but not
as cheap as a Wetherspoon or Sam Smith place. The George is pricey but is
one of the pubs that visitors to London should at least visit once as it is
historic and is owned by the National Trust (it's the pub that General
Heynau of Austro-Hungary sheltered in after escaping the attack by the
brewers and draymen at Barclay & Perkins brewery in 1850 who were angry at
his treatment of the people of Brescia). There are several good pubs in the
area and it's near Borough Market so worth a trip on a Friday or Saturday.
I've been to the Wellington at Waterloo. I wasn't impressed with the
service the day I went and prefer the Hole in the Wall anyway. The
Wetherspoon at Elephant is a typical JDW, love them or hate them.

Apparently it's £2.80ish a pint. 6 handpumps plus Leffe Blonde, Kronenbourg
Blanc (a sort of non-descript wheat beer for people who don't remember what
Hoegaarden used to taste like) and several lagers. The wheat beer is
ludicrously priced especially when you consider how bland it is but that's
a S&N policy out of the hands of the pub or chain.

The Mansion House is pretty basic, or at least it was last time I was
there. It's probably too early in the year to appreciate the beer garden.
However it has a major advantage in that it's actually visible from
Kennington station.

The Angel is probably better to use in the summer when the beer garden is
open, however the saloon bar has generally pretty much empty when I've
been there and it would be fairly easy to "colonise" it thoroughly.

Those are the two I'd vote for,

Sure, I'm flexible.

So to summarise:

Date: 25 March
Place: the Mansion House or the Angel
Time: ?

Once we get those details finalised, I'll post it to afpa and the uk

The Angel is handy for lots of bookshops, so it might make sense to meet
at lunchtime to allow raiding parties to make forays to Forbidden Planet
and Foyles. The Mansion House is handy for Kennington, so it might make
sense to meet late afternoon so that people can be somewhere more exciting
first. Though there's a new stall at the Elephant and Castle market that
has a mass of West African CDs at three quid each, which is nice.

The other factor to take into account is fodder for ravening afpers. The
Mansion House didn't serve food last time I was there. There are a couple
of good pizzeria's nearby as well as some more interesting things like a
Potuguese Bistro. The Angel does standard plastic pub food at standard
plastic pub food prices, and is handy for a huge range of places to eat
including my favourite Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately Il Pollo, which
used to do excellent and cheap Italian food, now seems to have gone.

I think it's your choice. Either the Angel at 2pm or the Mansion House at
6pm. I'll try to pop in to the Mansion House tomorrow to find out what
their policy is on proto-afpers.

Ooohh, bookshops! Okay, the Angel wins :-) Do you want to post the
meet announcement (since you can give directions, etc)?

It's your meet, so you post the announcement.

The Angel is at 61 St.Giles High Street, LONDON, WC2H 8LE. Nearest tube
station is Tottenham Court Road.

<http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/20/2012/Angel/Soho>

From Tooting it's a matter of taking the Charing Cross branch of the
Northern Line to Tottenham Court Road station. Take the exit for Centre
Point or the south side of Oxford Street (East). Go east along Oxford
Street to the right turn at the far side of centre point. That road leads
to St Giles High Street.

Regular meet attenders may know the pub since it's previously been used as
a meet venue to go with signings at Forbidden Planet.

Mine's an oatmeal stout.

Great, thanks. You can count me in.

My flight to Heathrow lands at 9:10 so I should have plenty of

For being Finnish, it isn't all that weird. <g>

After the torture of travelling for 2-3 hours on public transport, even
plastic pub food tastes like the best thing you've ever tasted in your
entire life - a bit like Dibblers sausage rolls perhaps!

All the best

Hi Cathryn, I do hope you make it here in one piece, as I'm counting on
you showing me your butterfly tattoo - that's if you've actually got it
done yet! :-)

Well, I *plan* to arrive in one piece :-)

I had the tat done just after I posted about it - in fact, I posted a
link to a pic of it, although I've since removed the photo because I
don't really want the whole world seeing my tat! It's really awesome,
though, and I'm totally happy with it. But you can see it at the meet
:-)

I'm happy to say that I have, actually, arrived in one piece. I even
have internet access, which is pretty good going, I think. It helps to
have a friend to stay with :-) It's much colder than I was expecting,
though - I'm going to have to go buy at least a warm jacket tomorrow,
if not an entire wardrobe of warm clothes.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meet :-)

Hi Cathryn, glad to hear you've gotten here safely, and in one piece, but
out of interest, which country have you come from, I've sort of been
wondering what kind of accent you have?

It's a good thing you've also got somebody to stay with, as the streets of
London aren't paved with gold (as they say), and might need someone to
lean on every now and again.

And don't worry about the weather, we're still in Winter, but we'll be
changing to Spring soon, so it won't be long till it start's getting a
little warmer again!

Dying to meet you

I'm from South Africa, although there are so many different types of
accents in SA that that probably doesn't tell you much :-) English is
my first language, though, so think whatshisname from Mission
Impossible more than Tsotsi (although that accent was horribly
exaggerated -at least, I hope we don't sound that bad!)

Oh yeah. I'm camping out in their living room at the moment, so I
really do need to find my own place soon, but it's been a great help.
Even just from the point of view of having someone explain how to buy
something at Argos :-)

Nobody knows how to shop at Argos, it's all a gamble. Hope you're
settling into Tooting well -- I live just round the corner. I saw all
the conversation about the Bedford, and if you're around for a bit it's
worth a visit (although beware it gets very very full on weeknights).
Down in Tooting Broadway though you've got a whole host of lovely
establishments -- I particularly recommend the Trafalgar and the Spirit
Bar. Enjoy your first afpmeet -- it's been a while since I've been to
one but the afpbunch are very friendly to newcomers.

AFPA and uk-meets :p

You uk-meets address is quite an old one - is it still correct?

It will be a multinational Welcome To London Meet for myself and Petri

Time: 2:00pm onwards, with possible eating and bookshop forays during
the afternoon.
