Daniel Craig is the new James Bond but he's a virtual unknown. Not my
opinion - box office stats prove it:
Daniel Craig's last two films Munich and Layer Cake both underperformed
at the US box office. Layer Cake was seen by about one man and his dog
in the US. This is how much Layer Cake has grossed in the US:
$2,339,957

Yes, Layer Cake, starring DANIEL CRAIG made an astounding TWO MILLION
DOLLARS at the US Box Office! To put that into perspective, most
successful films make more than that on one day's release.
Munich:
Production Budget: $70 million
Domestic: $43,386,220 55.6%
+ Overseas: $34,590,869 44.4%
Worldwide: $77,977,089

Films need to take two to three times their total budget to break even.
I guess it's too 'political' for mainstream audiences - so I doubt it's
done much to raise Craig's profile.
Unless Craig's next film, The Visiting, is a big hit, hardly anyone
outside the UK will have seen him in a film. So he's a big risk, and
Sony need to give him massive promotion if Casino Royale is to be
successful. But I'm sure Sony are aware of this.
