Owen: 'No-one can beat Sean's Bond'
Actor Clive Owen has revealed he repeatedly turned down the role of
James Bond - because he reckons no-one can top Sean Connery.
The 41-year-old heart-throb was tipped to be the next 007 before Daniel
Craig signed up to be the first blond Bond.
But in an interview with Glamour magazine, Owen said: "Playing James
Bond would have been like entering a golden prison, and I doubt that
would have suited me.
"I may be the only actor who consistently said, 'No, no and no'.
"I never understood what I would have been able to add to the role, or
how I could play a character who has already been defined in the past.
For me, Sean Connery is the real James Bond."
Craig, 36, was unveiled last year as the star of the next Bond film
Casino Royale.
Another name once linked to the role was Sharpe star Sean Bean, who
played rogue spy 006 in GoldenEye.
Bean revealed last week that he and Craig have a history.
"I think there was a time I was linked to it but I suppose I blew it
playing 006. They made a good choice in Daniel Craig. He's a very good
actor," he said.
"He was in one of the first Sharpes we ever did and I gave him a bit of
a battering. So we can always say Sharpe battered Bond."

In other words, he was never asked.

Jesus Christ, they have a good actor, an Oscar-caliber writer. Deal
with it.

What a nitwit thing to say, BTW. "I can't top Connery." How about you
just play the role? Did nobody play Hamlet after Olivier?
I think Owen and Jackman and all these guys are going to be in
revionist history overdrive for a while, because it became such a big
deal that they WEREN'T given the part. Especially when the memo from
Eon leaked that badmouthed those guys.
Actually I saw Owen in his small role the Pink Panther film. What a
God-awful remake. It was at a special screening for MGM employees (not
me -- I was a guest of an emplyee) and it got booed at the end. Booed
by your own studio -- yikes.

Dude! Who ya talkin' to?
He's a ghost man. Ignore him.

Well, true. But the story IS real. A lot of papers picked it up because
of the Pink Panther movie. God knows there's nothing interesting to
talk about in that.)

I agree that no one will be able to top Connery, but it certainly makes
sense to continue with the series, as long as it adds something worthwhile
to the series. There were a few times that I thought it might be time to
stop, but lo and behold, they came back with something worthwhile, like
TSWLM and TLD.

Really? The Steve Martin movie? It looks terrible in the trailer. Now that's
a case where you cannot replace Sellers, so why even try.

In football, as in life, a fatal combination.

Yes I am and the game was a bitter pill to swallow. Ultimately, only one
team can be a winner, the other 29 are losers but there are very few people
here who feel that the Steelers were the better team. They were sucsessful
with 3 big plays, 2 more than the Seahawks made (or were allowed).

I had money on the game, and was all over Seattle! I'm not a fan of the
too-intense Bill Cowher, and I think Shaun Alexander is a terrific athlete
and fun to watch. He didn't have a great game though. The calls killed
Seattle, but Parker's 75 yard TD scamper, and the defense allowing a first
down on ***3rd and 27*** were unforgivable mistakes.
I would have loved to have seen Seattle play the Bears in the NFC
championship game.
Maybe next year.

I shall leave it to my fellow UK posters to respond to that
deliberately provocative comment...

Yeah, well, Pittsburgh wouldn't even have made it past the wild card game if
they didn't play dirty and take out Cinci's QB and top receiver in the first
few plays of Cinci's first offensive drive. Earlier in the season
Rothlisberger (sp?) was all PO'd about how NO player should ever go for a
QBs legs, yet his own teammate may have permanently ended Carson Palmer's
career and he doesn't say a frelling word!
Next year either Carson or if his career is over, Doug Johnson will make
them pay and they won't be so "lucky". Oh, and don't say it was an
"accident". That's revisionist history at it's most dastardly. That a-hole
von Oelhoffen (I never liked him when he played for Cinci) stood there
looking down at Carson as if to say "Go ahead and get back up, I'll do it
again next play" instead of kneeling down to see if he was OK when Palmer
was clearly in pain.

Palmer was on my fantasy team, and he got me to our championship game.
Great athlete, classy guy. I hope his return is 100%.
