What do you think? ,surely a Byrd influenced song.
Is that Carol Kaye on guitar?

Songs have similar structure, no?

When I saw her name in the auxiliary I was curious if she had replaced
Roy Estrada on bass somewhere on the record, but FZ mentioned in an
interview that she played 12-string. I don't hear a Byrds influence on
the song, though.

The song was lifted from Eclesiastes. Zappa had
little use for religion. If there's any structural
similarity, remember that rock and roll is based
on a very limited set of compositional themes;
that any two songs sound alike is inevitable.

The Byrds set "Space Odyssey" (on Notorious Byrd Brothers) to the tune
Handsome Cabin Boy, which FZ recorded around the same time although he
didn't release it until much later. But I don't suppose the Byrds got
the idea from him.

I think *she* mentions somewhere being an instrumentalist on both
Freak Out! and Absolutely Free, and I've always been curious as to
where this would have been...especially given the blurbs about the
Mothers playing their own instruments.

Being the resident twelve-string player would put her on Brown Shoes
Don't Make It, among other things, right?

Twelve-string guitar can be heard on How Could I Be Such a Fool.

I was thinking the same thing, too. And Franki Valli didn't even care

At <http://www.carolkaye.com/www/library/guitarhits.htm>, she says that
she played on the "1st 2 Frank Zappa LP's (12-string)". She doesn't
actually name them.

According to Musicians Union records, Carol Kaye played on the following
FZ sessions:

3/10/66 (MOI): I'm Not Satisfied, You Didn't Try To Call Me, I Ain't Got
No Heart, How Could I Be Such A Fool?

6/21/66 (Bobby Jameson): Gotta Find My Roogalator, Girl From The East

7/4/66 (The Animals): The Other Side Of This Life, All Night Long

7/5/66 (The Animals): Smokestack Lightning, Louisiana Blues, Hit The
Road Jack, Lucille

Four sessions produced by FZ over a four-month period are enough to make
it plausible that she simply misremembered her work with him as being
two albums.

On the other hand, at
<http://www.carolkaye.com/www/education/tips1.htm>, she recalls working
for FZ alongside Tommy Tedesco and Dennis Budimer. Neither of them
played on Freak Out!, but they both played on Lumpy Gravy.

So it's conceivable that Carol Kaye played on Lumpy Gravy (possibly
substituting for Al Viola or Tony Rizzi, who are credited in the session
sheets). That would mean that she played on FZ's first and third albums.
If she wasn't following his career closely, she might easily have
thought that sessions one year apart were for consecutive albums.

Any twelve-string guitar on Absolutely Free was played by Jim Fielder,
who was a member of the MOI at the time the album was recorded. He's
credited on all the AF sessions. The only non-MOI musicians listed in
the session sheets are precisely the ones who played the instruments
mentioned in the liner notes--two violins, viola, cello, trumpet, and
contrabass clarinet.

Cool to see Carol Kaye mentioned! My best buddy in the San Diego area
(i drummed for in the 80-90's) did a session at Carol Kaye's house. She
is an incredibly crazed/odd woman...definetly a 60's wild lady-now older
of coarse but very wacked. She is however an Incredible Bass
Player!...to this day, with a LONG list of sessions & motown recordings
aswell.

Thanks all,

Y.W.

p.s. are the Rolling Stones really playing at Super Bowl?

Hi Charles,

Do I have to save these posts of yours or will the valuable info all be
in your forthcoming book? BTW I pre-order.

The conclusions should all be in the book. Some of the argumentation and
speculation may not be.

Also, I should point out that the information about Musicians Union
session sheets comes from the third edition of Greg Russo's Cosmik
Debris <http://www.crossfirepublications.com/>.
