CotW update [message #215322] Di, 31 Januar 2006 15:05

Can someone clarify what the exact status of the Silm CotW schedule is
- the website seems to be done, and has been for a couple of days. I
have a chapter to do by February 13th according to the original
schedule, but have we slipped back from that?

The last chapter that was posted was chapter 7 of the Silmarillion
proper, 'Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor', which was
posted on December 27.

That would mean that we are at least four weeks behind the original
schedule, and then I believe we agreed to slow down the schedule to a
chapter every two weeks rather than only a one week break every four
weeks or so.

I don't know what is wrong with the maoltuile.org domain -- I get DNS
errors when I try, which makes me suspect that URL has become invalid
(who owned the URL, and could they have forgotten to pay for the
renewal?) or something of that order.

Hmm. It is down, isn't it.

The Google cache from 22 January is still available:

http://tinyurl.com/7fqkn

What is needed to get the project going again...

(apart from me updating the schedule page with new dates, and checking
that people can post their chapter introductions on the new dates, and
finding somewhere else to post the schedule until the maoltuile problems
are resolved - I'll use my personal webspace from my ISP for the moment)

....is the following:

1) Someone to post an introduction for chapter 8 "Of the Darkening of
Valinor" - failing any other volunteers, I'll do this sometime this
week.

2) More discussion on the past chapters, to bring things up to speed for
the current chapters.

I'll take a look at the previous posts and try to think of something
relevant to add to them this week. I am glad to hear we are running
late, as work has been crazy and I have barely started my analysis of
Return of the Noldor.

Well, Troels' post with the new dates (thanks for that Troels!)
completely failed to propagate to my ISP's news server. Ho hum. But at
least I can see it on Google Groups.

Could everyone else on that list please confirm that they can do the new
dates? It will save me having to write to everyone. Thanks. I've also
noted the confirmation from Troels and Odysseus, and will add Troels in
for the new chapter he volunteered for.

That's usenet for you -- for some reason it was always the posts I
most wanted to read that got dropped on my ISP's news-server, which
was why I decided to change to individual.net (not implying anything
with respect to my own post).

> Could everyone else on that list please confirm that they can do
> the new dates?

Have you heard from Chris lately? Part of the reason for the delay,
as I recall it, was that Chris suddenly got extremely busy, and if
that hasn't stopped, we may have to find a volunteer for the next
chapter already.

It would help tremendously to get confirmations for the next chapters
soon (so therefore I reproduce them here -- others might have the
same problem as Christopher):

Feb 13th, 2006 8. Of the Darkening of Valinor
(Chris Kern?)
Feb 27th, 2006 9. Of the Flight of the Noldor
(Eric Root)
Mar 13th, 2006 10. Of the Sindar

Good work there ;-)

Now we desparately need either confirmation or a volunteer for next
week (unless Christopher has been in contact with Chris?):

Feb 13th, 2006 8. Of the Darkening of Valinor
(Chris Kern?)

Scheduled for next Monday, and I can't make it myself. The next
chapter, for the end of the month, is less urgent right now, but it
would be nice to get it confirmed (because then we'll be settled all
the way through to 8th of May).

Feb 27th, 2006 9. Of the Flight of the Noldor
(Eric Root)

> oh, and which volume of HOME has the bit about the origins of orcs?

MR it is, the last part 'Myths Transformed' has a section on the
origin of Orcs.

I have been meaning to do this chapter myself ever since it began
looking like no volunteers were going to step forward, but I am really
struggling to find the time to do things like update the page. Troels,
thanks again for posting the dates and getting things moving again. I
will post this chapter summary and discussion questions if no-one else
volunteers, but it would be really great if someone else could
volunteer!

I've e-mailed Eric Root, so we should be OK through to the 8th of May. I
haven't had time to e-mail the others whose chapters were coming up on
the old schedule, so we'll have to hope they check before posting.

Any of the old reserve volunteers ready to step in here? Though only
Stan seems to have posted in the last couple of months, the list in

Dr. Ernst Stavro Blofeld [27 Apr], Stan Brown [7 Feb], AC (Aaron

I think the best course right now is to put it up somewhere else for
the moment. It seems that the domain maoltuile.org is out of business

I just saw that we've already heard from Huan (sorry, my work server
has only a couple of days retention, so your post had already expired),
so the next, unheard-from, poster is, to the best of my knowledge,
Morgoth's Curse who was originally scheduled for 17th April, but who is

Christopher has been uncharacteristically quiet here, so I will cast
myself up as self-proclaimed assistant care-taker in this matter, and
ask if you're still willing to do this chapter, and if you are capable
of posting an introduction some time in the coming week (i.e. no later
than 25 Februrary)?

If that is possible, then I think we'll move on witht that and keep the
schedule I posted earlier in the thread, though it doesn't allow the
two weeks per chapter that we agreed on earlier.

:-D

I am reminded of the treatment of Mao Tse Dung's quotes in Doonesbury
(the cartoon by Trudeau), according to which they would recognize
quotable sentences by their addition, "Quote it!"

Nevertheless what you said is unfortunately true -- I think . . . ;-)

I was going to suggest that we reserve the Akallabeth for Steuard
Jensen. It would be nice if he could contribute at least once to the
COtW. :) But I guess it's just not in the cards.

Great, thanks.

That means that the schedule is currently:

This week, 8. Of the Darkening of Valinor
(Larry Swain *)
Feb 27th, 2006 9. Of the Flight of the Noldor
(Eric Root *)
Mar 13th, 2006 10. Of the Sindar
(Count Menelvagor *)
Mar 27th, 2006 11. Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor
(Odysseus *)
Apr 10th, 2006 12. Of Men
(Troels Forchhammer *)
Apr 24th, 2006 13. Of the Return of the Noldor
(Neil Anderson *)
May 8th, 2006 14. Of Beleriand and its Realms
(Morgoth's Curse *)
May 22nd, 2006 15. Of the Noldor in Beleriand
(?)
Jun 5th, 2006 16. Of Maeglin
(Huan the Hound *)
Jun 19th, 2006 17. Of the Coming of Men into the West
(?)
Jul 3rd, 2006 18. Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin
(Neil Anderson *)
Jul 17th, 2006 19. Of Beren and Lúthien
(Eric Root *)
Jul 31st, 2006 20. Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad
(Morgoth's Curse *)
Aug 14th, 2006 21. Of Túrin Turambar
(Yuk Tang)
Aug 28th, 2006 22. Of the Ruin of Doriath
(Christopher Kreuzer *)
Sep 11th, 2006 23. Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin
(Matthew T. Curtis *)
Sep 25th, 2006 24. Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath
(Larry Swain *)
Oct 9th, 2006 - Akallabêth
(Larry Swain *)
Oct 23rd, 2006 - Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
(Troels Forchhammer *)
Nov 6th, 2006 - Tables: (Genealogies; The Sundering of the Elves);
Index of Names; Map
(Matthew T. Curtis *)
Nov 20th, 2006 - Note on Pronunciation;
Appendix: Elements in Quenya and Sindarin names
(?)

The posters marked with an asterisk are those for whom we have a
confirmation for the new dates. I have assumed an implicit
confirmation from Larry Swain and Christopher Kreuzer who have posted
to the thread without complaint ;-)

That means that we only need a confirmation from Yuk Tang that the
new date is OK?

And then we need to find volunteers to introduce the last three
unclaimed parts:

Silmarillion ch. 15: 'Of the Noldor in Beleriand', May 22nd
Silmarillion ch. 17: 'Of the Coming of Men into the West', June 19th
Note on Pronunciation and Quenya appendix, November 20th

Well, there's always the chapters mentioned above -- and I could
possibly be persuaded to swap one of mine if needed ;-)

If I can dig out my Silm again, I'll take ch15 'Of the Noldor in
Beleriand' as well.

Great, thanks!

Until further notice, I will post the remaining schedule regularly.

Looking at my sentbox, it seems I did ch5 'Of Eldamar and the Princes
of the Eldalie'. If there's a ch25 'Of the Numenoreans and their
realms in Middle-Earth', I'll do that as well, and maybe ch35 'Of the
Earendili and the Princes of the Andromeda Galaxy'.

LOL! Thanks, Troels (and thanks to Larry for posting the 'Darking of
Valinor' thread). I've been a bit busy recently, but enjoying the break.
The discussions look fascinating! The other update is that I heard from
Eric Root (doing the next chapter) and he says it will probably be a few
days late.
