You could prolly get a Windows emulator.

My problem is that I know nothing about programming languages other than
BASIC, and I change things a lot. I don't know how to compile a kernel or
add driver support, and I don't want to be constantly reinstalling
everything every time I changed something.

Using Linux doesn't actually require knowledge of programming -- common
myth. Heck, with some distros you don't even need to compile your
kernel, ever. Fedora comes with everything built as modules, so you
just figure out what drivers you need and one command adds them. Heck,
I think it even detects all your hardware for you. Ubuntu is even
better, from what I hear -- simplest install in the world.

Linux is much less scary than it used to be. You don't even need to
touch the command-line any more, really. And even that isn't as hard as
it sounds -- there are tutorials for pretty much everything. Adding
support in the kernel is as simple as looking around in a menu, then
typing a few commands. You can practically cut and paste them from a
website, too. (and in Linux, cut & paste is amazingly simple... highlight
the text you want, middle-click in the destination. Probably my single
favorite feature of X Windows)

Gaming -- we're still working on that. Hard to support games that won't
support your platform, but the industry is very slowly changing it's
mindset on that, I think. And Cedega works, sometimes. Still... games
support *is* the weak point of Linux.

Just a Point of View,

I had Mandriva up and running without much more effort than
downloading the disks and popping them in a computer....

Well, I'm happy with Windows for now.
